Problems with my employer. Advice needed

Hi, I started a job in a very large reputable hotel 5 weeks ago, everything was fine until pay day, I was expecting to receive a months pay and I was paid a grand total of £130 basically I had worked the fiirst 4 weeks and I did a total during this of 142 hours yet on my wage slip it showed I had been paid for 23 hours, , I checked with my boss who said I would not get paid anything owed to me until the next pay date which is the last date of every month, also when I signed my contract (I am at the moment attempting to get a copy from him) it stated that I would be on £5.62 an hour, however on my wage slip it show I am only getting £5.52 an hour, on asking my boss about this he said he had got it wrong and that I am only entitled to £4.60 an hour? I was 22 in Dec 2007. I have also just been told by my boss that I have had my hours cut next week to zero as punishment, apparently on my day off someone saw me at the cinema (however I did not go to the cinmea, but even if I had as it was my day of thats my buissness). My boss reckons I should have been in work, and just did not turn up, and as someone supposedly saw me at the cinema I am being punished, I did check the rota and my name was not down for that night, I feel I am being bullied victimised and he obviously is not paying me as stated on my contract, I feel like just walking out, I was speaking to someone else who has been there longer than me and she has been paid wrongly for the past 3 months, any advice please on what I can do, would be appreciated.

Speak to payroll, not your manager.0

Serious mistakes have been made - some of them totally unprofessional and almost laughable.
This is the thin end of the wedge and does not bode well.
List the mistakes and accusations that have been made and take your issues to the next level (in addition to clarifying with payroll). You need that contract pronto. Do you keep a timesheet or get given a copy of the rota or clock in or out? It looks to me as though you have to start collecting evidence of what you are asked to work and proof that you actually did.
And of course, look for another job.

1) First months wages can often be paid later due to payroll deadlines
2) They clearly misread the rota or didnt read it at the right time
3) The hourly rate one is interesting but thick people get minimum wage, I doubt anyone will be rushing to pay the OP anymore
Harsh Ooooooooh.
There are failings on both side of this; if the OP is telling the truth (which I don't doubt), then the manager has a few shortcomings as well, given that she was not aware of any problems that could occur, that the contract - or at least terms & conditions - isn't readily available and that confusion over days off results in witholding pay as "punishment"!!!!
Nah, there's something wrong with this job.........Blonde: Unemployed: Bankrupt.

I don't know if this is the right advice, carylh, but it really doesn't sound good to me. I think you either need to go above your boss (which might get his/her back up and could even make things worse?) or you might be better off looking for another job, asap.
Unfortunately the fact that it's a large reputable company doesn't always mean they'll get things right. I also worked at a large and (I thought!) reputable company, and almost everyone's first paypacket was wrong..
[and Ooooh's post is intended as a provokation, I think.. ]0 -
Normally, you would work a month in hand, as you have less money than you expected this is no doubt due to the cut off date for payroll.
As others have said if you have problems with your pay, you should really speak to Payroll and maybe HR especially if the information given to you by your line manager is incorrect.
What is normal practice within companies both large and small is to send you a contract (usually two copies of the letter giving you details of pay etc, that they send after you have accepted). You are expected to sign both and return one to the employer.
If you feel you are being victimised make a note of all incidences, ensure you have copies of all your evidence and take out a grievance with HR.0 -
I would like to thank all of you who have responded, exect one that is.
I rang my Boss today to attempt to discuss my wages etc and guess what I heard him say to the receptionist "tell her I am not in" I wasnt even told he would ring me back, so I went to the Hotel armed with a letter stating that I was handing in my notice, so basically I have quit.
I got a copy of my contract while I was there which clearly states that I would be earning £5.62 an hour (a form that both myself and my Boss signed), not the £5.52 I was paid or the £4.60 he said that I was entitled to, I also have a copy of my rota which clearly shows the day that I was supposedly at the cinema was my day off, so even if I had been at the cinema it was none of his buisness. And I have also contacted payroll as you advised with thanks and I was told that only 13 hours of my work pay would have been affected by the payroll deadline therefore my pay was definately wrong, according to them the information that they recieved from my boss shows me as only working 23 hours, however I have all of my hours worked clearly marked on my clock in slips. While I was there I managed to obtain the contact details of 3 other girls who quit after I had started, I rang them once I had got home and guess what the same thing happened to them with their pay, one of them has contacted a Solicitor as she had been there over 3 months and still not paid correctly or the amount stated on her contract, the solicitor told her she can basically take our x Boss to court as he has not honoured the contract or something to that effect anyway, so I am also going with her to the Solicitors this week. Thanks again for all of your responses, I didnt want to quit but it was either that or I may have said something that I later regretted and got the sack, so now I am looking for another job. One response angered me,

A response just for you:
1) I have checked the payroll deadline and yes my pay is definately wrong.
2) our rotas are easily read and as I said yes it was my night off.
3) As for the hourly rate unless you are thick like me  you must be aware of the National minimum wage act, which allows even people of a limited intellect the right to earn a decnt wage . I must say that I decided to be nosey and read some of your other responses to other peoples threads, and I am glad that its not just me that you have decided to pick on, either you must be extremely bored or you are one of those people that thrive on picking on people. Thanks to everyone else, but I had to make my point as I felt the response from Oooooooohhhhh harsh and really unnecessary

I take it you are speaking from experience , number 3 obviously applies to you !:rolleyes:0 -
Have they taken deductions from gross pay? Some employers take pension payments from gross - very very unlikely in this instance but still possible.0
