I wanna learn to drive

I live in Enfield, North London and want to take driving lessons.

Any advice on this and ways to save money would be much appreciated!

  • Taking driving lessons is not cheap, so only take on this challenge when you are sure that you can carry it through.

The average test pass is achieved after an average of 43 hours of professional tuition and 22 hours of private practice (according to the DSA).

Getting the best instructor you can find could halve the amount of lessons you need, so paying the best instructor £26/hour for 40 hours will cost £1040, but trying to skimp and paying a naff instructor £18/hour for 80 hours will cost £1440.

Finding instructors is always hard, but you can look at some of the driving forums for help. The best place to start is usually the 2pass forum.

    Good luck.
  • Hi all :j

I just received an alert from DSA that they will have to reimburse about £10 for people who were wrongly overcharged when taking exams on Saturdays! This is backed from November 2005.

Read it from the horse's mouth yourselves:

I have been trying to pass the test for about 8 years now. Does anyone here have any inside information of how much money does DSA have to make on you before they decide to pass you on the pratical exam?

I know it is more like a lottery than a real assessment of your skills. Not to mention the examiners' fullness of themselves. They treat you like you are no human being!
Absolutely desperate to buy my own house/flat. Living in rented bedrooms for the past 9 years is not fun.
  • All you have to do is drive safely for 40 minutes.

If you are not able to pass the driving test then get some training from a good instructor who can show you how simple it is.

The DSA don't care how many tests you take, but I know that examiners seem much happier getting out of the car of a candidate who has passed than one who has put themselves in for their test before they are ready.

Sorry but that is a load of rubbish, many of my pupils passed first time because they waited until they were up to the required standard to pass the test.

I sat in the back of many driving tests and can say that I was hardly ever able to disagree when examiners failed a candidate, it was because they made either dangerous or plain stupid mistakes usually through nerves on the day.

OP, if you're in a position to buy a car straight away, consider buying it whilst learning to drive. Family and friends are far more likely to be willing to sit with you in your banger than they would be in their nice cars and you'll be able to get lots of experience and save on lessons.

There speaks the voice of sour grapes! Give up now and keep death off the road!
