Yogurt without a starter

I started off a batch of yogurt yesterday and only this morning when I was looking in the fridge for something did I realise that I forgot to put the starter in. But then when I looked at the ones I've made it has still worked, even without the starter. So it begs to ask, do you actually need one?

That's really interesting. Is it possible you didn't wash out the pot thoroughly so there was perhaps a little culture left in there? I'll be fascinated to see the responses to your post.
My Doctor told me that "1 out of 3 people who start smoking will eventually die." The other two apparently became immortal.

I washed the posts out really well and rinsed them out several times. I put milk and 1 teaspoon of powdered milk in each.

That's interesting,I suppose the very first ever yogurt must have been made without a starter;)

Perhaps it's like the natural yeasts that are present in the air and on some fruits?

I used to put too much muesli in my bowl each morning and leave out what I didn't eat for a snack when I got home. One time I didn't eat it when I got home and the next day when I tried it the milk had turned to yoghurt.

The first ever yogurt I made was done with a shop bought natural yogurt starter. I might do it without a starter all the time from now on.

I will ty this too, but I do think if we only put in milk we are going to get sour milk which is nothing like yogurt but yes well worth a try,
