Cry wolf. That’s what Shaun Ellis does on a daily basis. Ellis is a fearless wolf behaviour researcher with extremely unorthodox methods of study. For years, he has immersed himself in the lives of three wolves in captivity at Combe Martin Wildlife Park in North Devon. Ellis lives with these fearsome creatures nearly 24/7: howling, licking, snarling and even feeding with them from animal carcasses. His devotion to his work has cost him his marriage and family. Ellis’s ultimate aim is to gain sufficient understanding of wolf society to one day be able to release captive wolves into the wild, and to this end he has raised the three cubs from birth after their mother abandoned them, teaching them to howl and even feeding them from his own mouth.

By infiltrating their world, Ellis has been accepted as the alpha male, but as the wolves grow and develop, his position will inevitably be threatened. When this day comes, he knows he will be forced to adopt a subservient role if he is to remain within the family. Outside of the pack, Ellis’s unique research has taken him to America’s Yellowstone National Park and to Poland, where he is using his insight to develop unusual methods to deter wild wolves from preying on livestock, and attempting to protect a group of sheep-poaching Polish wolves from the wrath of the local farmers whose flocks are being devastated.
