Part of the Furniture I've been Money Tipped!

http://www.scalextric.com/competitions/christmas-2009-digital/

At Brooklands in August 2009 almost 20,000 pieces of track were required to complete the 2.95mile Guiness World Record breaking longest Scalextric track. How many C8205 track pieces would James May have to connect together to make a straight line of Scalextric between Margate and Fathers Christmas' Grotto at the North Pole?

How many C8205 Straight track pieces would be required to lay, in a straight line, from Margate to the North Pole?

1. Less than 1 million pieces
2. More than 1 million but less than 10 million pieces
3. More than 10 million pieces ;)

Please thank posters below for supplying the answer :T

  • According to wiki answers
    It is 2,660 miles (4281Kms) from London to the North Pole.

    My maths is pants, but someone should be able to work it out :)

    ps I know London is not Margate but it's about 50 miles difference

    C8205 track is 350mm long

    1609344mm = 1 mile

    around 4598 pieces of track = 1 mile

    10 million pieces of track would be about 2174 miles

    so I think the answer is more than 10 million
  • Yeah its definitely more than 10 million, rough answer is around 12 million pieces.

    The distance to the pole from Margate can be worked out using the co-ords from google maps.

    Find Margate, right click on it and choose "centre on map" then go to the BROWSER address bar and paste in this code

    javascript:void(prompt(”,gApplication.getMap().getCenter()));

    That will give you the lat and long co-ords for Margate...The pole is easy, it's 90 north latitude and 0 longtitude.

    This works out at 3971 km as far as I can manage to get...and the parts they mantion are 350 mm long.

    So thats 3971 thousand metres x 1000 mm = 3971 million mm divided by 350 mm ........11,345,714.28572 pieces ?

    So 3 seems right.

    Interesting how expensive this stuff has got since I was a kid.. £11.99 for that part..well for two of 'em. No wonder they didn't ask the cost eh it would put people right off lo .

    Feel free to check my working out...I may be wrong as it's early yet :)
