Hmm, several mentions of a rainbow remaining in front of you if you have your back to the sun, but have seen one from my window in my south-west facing house, or with the sun at around 2 O'clock IYKWIM, so going with false.
That's not to say this is the answer they're looking for, however,!
This site says... Three things must happen for you to see a rainbow's colors. First, the sun must be shining. Second, the sun must be behind you, and third, there must be water drops in the air in front of you. Sunlight shines into the water drops, which act as tiny prisms that bend or "refract" the light and separate it into colors.
which suggests true. Most confusing!
ETA Definitive answer, (well, the one they're after!) from their site....
Last week we asked you: ‘You can only see a rainbow with your back to the sun. True or False?’ It’s FALSE - 41% guessed correctly!
The sunlight is reflected back out from the raindrop, so you should have your back to the sun if you want to see a rainbow. But there are certain situations where it can be seen whilst facing the sun, due to the refraction of light.

Its true..many references in Google......as a new user cannot post links. Got it from bci.org
At one time or another we have all seen a rainbow. Rainbows happen when the sun is shining while it is raining or just after a storm. It appears in the part of the sky directly opposite to the sun. So you must stand with your back to the sun to see it. The lower the sun is to the horizon, the higher the arch of the rainbow will be.Did really well last year..nothing yet for 2011!! I live in hope!!! Thanks to all postersxx:wave:0 -
All of the references, like THIS and THIS and others say that you must have your back to the sun and they probably want an answer of true on this basis.
But, surely, if you are standing side on to the sun you would still be able to see a rainbow on your other side by turning your head in that direction. In which case your back would not be towards the sun. I do know that, while traveling on a train, I have seen a rainbow out of the window on my right and the evening sun out of the window on the left.0 -
I got this...
Can you go under a rainbow's arch and come out the other side? Not according to the laws of physics. A rainbow is all light and water. It is always in front of you while your back is to the sun0 -

It just struck me - if you win the rear-view sunglasses in this week's other Carling comp you can see a rainbow with your face towards the sun0
