Do you know any accredited financial courses in your area

One of the functions of The MSE Charity is to provide grants for people to do accredited courses to help them improve their consumer/debt/financial knowledge (in a non-professional sense).

We're talking financial literacy type courses or debt education. Sadly there's no centralised database... so our aim is to try and compile a list to help those who are looking for help.

If you know of a course in your area.. .if you could list it here with details (and if possible a web link) that'd be very helpful so we can tell people what courses are around...

Kind regards

Martin

  • It’s a bad time of year to see who’s running courses as generally the brochures will be released over the next month or so for a September start but here’s some info on relevant organisations in Northern Ireland. Hopefully it'll be of some use.

    If you want to reach voluntary, charity & community groups in Northern Ireland, there’s a well organised umbrella organisation that could help MSE reach a lot of potentially interested people. Here’s the weblink

    The Workers Educational Association provide lots of courses in the community.

    The further education colleges may run courses. I know Belfast Metropolitan have a huge part-time & community outreach programme but it’s not published yet.

    The Ulster People’s College is worth contacting

    Queens University also run leisure type courses.

    The Open College Network accredits courses: here’s the Northern Ireland link but it’s linked to a national body. Might be worth asking them which venues are running their financial courses?

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Some search sites:
    Education Guidance Service for Adults - really great at helping people but you need to register in order to search for courses. You can ring their learner line though on 0845 602 6632. (edit: AFAIK this is just for NI folks)
    http://www.nightcourses.com/search.html - Northern & southern Ireland – not a lot there at the moment but I used this a few years ago around September time & it was great.
    http://www.nicourses.com/ - same as above but NI only – good as can search all of NI at the same time but downside is that you can’t filter out the distance courses.
    Is this an area where MSE would consider developing it's own courses?
    Seeing some of the comments expressed on the boards there would certainly seem to be a need for it even if it may take some time to create demand.
    One of the best courses around is the Open University's DB123 " Personal Finance in Context". It goes right through income, debt, savings, mortgages, pensions and much, much more. I've just finished it and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Details on the OU website.
    I've done that course and I agree with you. I really enjoyed it and learned a lot. The financial tools CD is very useful and something I will use in the future.
    If students do not have a degree already, they may get some or all of the costs paid depending on their circumstances and household income. See here for more info:
    Stewardship (https://www.stewardship.org.uk) is a Christian organisation which has a network of volunteers all around the country who are trained as Personal Budget Coaches, and in some cases, debt advisors. Contact Stewardship who can put you in touch with a personal budget coach in your area. You don't have to be a Christian, you don't have to have any religious beliefs .... anyone who needs support in sorting our their finances can be helped by a volunteer. It is all free - and there are no strings attached. Some churches have Money Managment schemes where there are teams of volunteers who help in their local area - I co-ordinate the team for my area near Reading. Sometimes we run Basic Money courses (over a period of three weeks, generally).
  • I work for NCFE a National Awarding Body.. We have a Level 2 Certificate in Personal Money Management. We don't actually run the qualifications but we do have colleges throughout the UK that do. This qualification is nationally recognised. You can contact us at info@ncfe.org.uk if you'd like to see if there's a college in your area.
    Alternatively if your looking to develop your own course we can help! We have the facility to accredit bespoke courses. If you want more information on this please email me emmahetherington@ncfe.org.uk.
    thanks
    Emma
  • If you are in Scotland it is worth checking out the learndirect scotland website - www.learndirectscotland.com - for courses. Just type in money or debt to the subject field then click on the Search button.
    You can also get funding towards some courses from ILA Scotland - have a look on www.ilascotland.org.uk Again you can search a database of courses by subject and area that you can get up to £200 towards.
  • Hello Martin,
    In response to your post, just read a book that's not just a book on debt but on life choices ; "The Money Secret", by Rob Parsons (https://www.themoneysecret.info) and if you feel compelled to put this forward to the MSE Charity then please do so. It has changed 1000's of peoples lives already by them simply reading the book.
    Faithfully,
    The Harts
