Cool wash is a bit smelly

Options
I have tried to be environmentally virtuous by doing washing at 30-40C. However, I have noticed a stale sweat smell when ironing my husband's 'cool-washed' clothes. Has anyone else experienced this? What can I do to get rid of this smell or do I need to go back to using the good old boil-wash?
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

  • I had the same problem, I've gone back to 60 for gym gear and other such things. Its better to wash something at 60 and have it worn than wash at 30 and have it thrown back in the wash bin as it smells
  • Me too! I do towels and tops at 60, everything else at 30. But my teenagers school shirts still smell when ironing even when washed at 30. Yuck.

well it is working fine here, washing at 30. I use soapnuts, even on my dh`s sweaty lycra cycling gear but he washes it straight away, after his shower. I`m talking real cycling here and very sweaty clothing. Perhaps it is to do with sweat drying on

Hi, there  We have an older thread - 30 degree wash. I'll add this thread to that one later to keep ideas together.

Thanks for all your comments. What are soap nuts?!

Must admit I have resorted to the occasional 'boil wash'. Reminds me of those old Radion adverts where the woman is ironing & all the laundry is smelly. Never knew what she was on about until I started washing at low temperatures........or am I showing my age???

Have also noticed that deodorant doesn't wash out properly either & accumulates on hubbies shirts like a whitish hard deposit.....which is simply lovely! Just can't find anything to shift that either.

I regret to say that I may have to revert to 60 C washes.

My washing has started to smell especially as I put the WM on as I go to bed and OH puts it on line/in TM in morning so we get it done on the cheap rate. I cleaned all the filter today and that was disgusting. Really stinky. I have had to pour 1/2 bottle vinegar in to get rid of the smell. I don't think the water is hot enough to disolve the grot so I am going back to recommended amount of soap on the dirtiest clothes and hotter washes for whites. Hopefully this will prevent build up of whatever is making things stink.

http://www.washerhelp.co.uk/washing-machine-usage.html has advice on keeping your washer in good condition, using overnight (there is someone on this forum who's had a fire caused by a washer)

Washing machines should be emptied asap or they will be left 'wet' then leave the door open on it or it'll stink in no time.

I use 30 washes but do a regular service wash usually with cloths in. I have reduced the amount of powder I use down to a spoonful or half a tablet on most washes, my sons clothes even come out clean and my washer doesn't get full of gunk.
One day I might be more organised...........
