  • Thanks Keth - that was what I thought it might be. I have a sad addiction to dried apricots, my hand goes in the jar all by itself! I am making truffles later, so may use some of the melted chocolate to try this out. It will make a nice addition to the HM sweets I am doing for DD1's BF parents.

By the way, I have complained about my lack of turkey and I am told I can expect compensation after Christmas, I will let you know what happens.. they have already given me an eVoucher for free delivery as an "interim gesture of goodwill."

Merry Christmas everyone, I hope all your stockings are filled with kitchen gadgets!:rotfl:
  • I've just posted this on the quick questions thread - can anybody help me? I've been soaking ham for just over 2 days now, didn't deliberately mean to but stayed at relatives. I just thought I'd ask here too, if its still ok to cook it?
The water smelled a bit pongy when I just drained it.

I also wanted to say to you all, thank you for such a wonderful thread, some lovely tips and great camardieship (sp). I am also the proud owner of one Tesco's Donut maker!! :-) So looking to try that out later.

Merry Christmas everybody - have a blast!

    :snow_laug Happy Christmas All:xmastree:

Haven't had chance to read all through this thread but can some suggest what they think should be in a 'store cupboard' ?
OH does most of the food shopping and there's normally tins or jars or packets of soup/cook in sauces that can make a bland meal more interesting. Always got veg either in the freezer or in tins but mostly fresh and we often opt for the BOGOF items but it would be handy to see what people think is a reasonable type of stuff to store.

This is a copy of my own list which I drew up last year. I make my own bread so I use several different types of bread flour and I do quite a bit of baking so I keep good stocks of baking ingredients. I dont use many herbs and spices.

The way I worked it out was to go through a typical months menu and try to write down everything I would use in that time. Its difficult to remember everything but I didn’t do too badly!

Flour – SR, Plain, Bread, Wholemeal, Granary and Seeded, Cornflour, Rice flour etc
Sugar – granulated, castor, icing, brown
Rice – pudding and long grain
    Semolina
Pasta – shapes, lasagne, spaghetti etc
    Dried milk, long life milk
    Gravy granules
    Stock cubes, marigold stock powder
    Marmite, bovril
    Dried beans, lentils, pulses
    Breakfast cereals
Cake flavouring and baking items –
    - dried fruit, cherries, dessicated coconut, golden syrup, sweet sherry
    - essences, colourings, ginger, vanillla, custard powder, jellies
Salt, black pepper, vinegar and table sauces -
ketchup, tartare, mint, horseradish, mint, cranberry, mayo, salad cream and salad dressing
Balsamic vinegar, red and white wine vinegar
Chutneys (including mango, home made) pickled onions amd beetroots
Jams, marmalade, chocolate spread, lemon curd
Cook in sauces and pasta sauces – packets, tins or jars
Spices and herbs – curry powder, chilli, sage, basil, mixed herbs,
Tomato puree, garlic puree, garlic powder, pesto
Tea, coffee, drinking chocolate, ovaltine, horlicks, cuppa soups,
    Biscuits, snacks
    Tins
    – vegetables - tomatoes, mushrooms, carrots, peas, kidney beans, baked beans,
    – fruit, pie fillings
    – meat (corned beef etc),. fish (tuna, salmon, sardines, etc etc),
    – soup

in my fridge I always have
butter, cheeses, trex, suet, value butter for baking

    Hope this helps!

Hope you're all having a great day, I'm just off for my turkey dinner!! :rudolf:
