Dear all,
inspiration needed.
I have looked on Google with no joy.
Don't want to buy if I can help it. Anyone got any ideas of easy costumes to make.
I was thinking of maybe a spider, bumble bee or ladybird.
I hate it when the Nursey does these things as I am always left in a panic. Not helped by the fact I have 3 boys (one with a broken arm) my MIL has just had a stoke and I have to go to work.
Moan over, if anyone has any ideas please let me know.
Regards
Anne

This might help.
When I was 5 (1970) I won a school fancy dress competition dressed as a ladybird. My mum used to dress me in a black roll-neck jumper, black tights and a red sleeveless dress. My teacher was always saying that if I had black spots on the back of my dress I'd look just like a ladybird.
So,my mum made some spots out of black fabric, sewed them on and embroidered a black line down the back of the red dress. She then made a helmet shaped cap out of black fabric that did up under my chin if I remember rightly. She finished it off with a pair of black pipecleaner feelers and I won a bar of chocolate!
The following year, inspired by the ladybird's success I became a moth.Similar hat but this time in a grey fabric, some kind of grey top and tights and lovely gauzy grey-purple wings. The wings were just attached at the back of my jumper and tied to my wrists,so they floated rather than stuck out.I won second prize with that one:)
This is probably only helpful if you've got a red dress and black tights and your son is willing to wear a dress:rotfl: However it does show how you can adapt existing clothes to make quite wonderful costumes.
It also helps if you've got my mum to help:D
Anyway,I hope that's been of some use - my school is always giving very short notice for this sort of thing and my kids always want to be Aragorn or worse Sauron:rolleyes:0 -
For a spider all black with 4 pairs of black tights stuffed with socks for legs. Could even sew a red patch on the back for black widow."A banker is a fellow who lends you his umbrella when the sun is shining, but wants it back the minute it begins to rain." Mark Twain0

Thanks for the useful ideas.
Still can't decide between spider, ladybird and bee.
I am sure whatever I make won't look right as I have never been any good at arty things.
However at least it will give the teachers something to laugh at.
Feel like caving in and buying something form a fancy dress shop.
Though I will resist urge.

If you choose bee, you could use a little velcro so you can stick bits of 'pollen' to it.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0

Hello,I signed up specifically to answer this! When I was younger my mum often made fancy dress outfits from old clothes and bits and bobs.Everything went into a dressing up bag.A spider outfit that my sister once wore was black tights, black top,4 pairs of tights stuffed with newspaper, black headband with black pipecleaners attached to the top of it and black gloves.Hope this helps.0

Thank you for going to so much trouble and joining mse to help with my outfit.
I will have a go at making the spider tonight. My fall back position is to go to the large material shop when I am next in work on Thursday and buy black material to make a tabard. I will then buy yellow felt for stripes and use your idea regarding the headband and pipe cleaners.
Thanks for the idea of the pollen gingham ribbon.
Hopefully my 3 year old will now resemble some type of insect, though with my sewing skills not so sure. No matter I am sure he will look cute.
Thanks everyone

Dear all,
thanks to all your help finally made spider outfit. Sewed six black stuffed tights onto black teeshirt. Made black cape and bought white fabric paint.
Painted spiders web onto cape and teeshirt.
Have enclosed photo of my 3 year old. He was so pleased with it. It brought a tear to my eye to see him swinging his spider legs as they danced at the nursery.
Was really proud of myself for making it myself and saving money.
Have now put it away as I will use it again for Halloween.
