I saw the shredder in Staples, its a rexel one and its 9.99, they had loads in the store in Bolton - it doesn't cross-shred though.

Good spot, I'm off to BigW now.
if i had known then what i know now
  • The wife came home with one from Woolworths. She works for a bank and is increasingly concerned about the number of identity frauds that are being reported.

It is security level 3 (whatever that is).
It cross-cuts therefore shredding into smaller pieces.
It will cut credit cards (apparently)

All in all, definately worth a look!
    something missing
  • Aldi have the best cross cut shredder i have seen for the price of 19.99, its a tevion or medion, its worth buying as i have never had any problems with these two German imports

  • To add some first-hand knowledge:

Staples had a cross-cut shredder at £9.99 in their post Xmas sale - may still do. At the two stores I saw them they were in a big mound of boxes behind the tills area. They were their 'own brand' in that an 'made in China' brand with a Staples UK distributor/address on it.

I bought two for friends (as part of a £30 spend with a £5 off voucher offer from before Xmas). It is rated at upto 3 sheets of 70g paper and has the expected power features - ie auto on (when you insert a sheet to shred), on, reverse and off. When I commissioned one at friend's yesterday it was impressive - cutting into VERY small rectangles - certainly noticably smaller pieces than the £35 Rexel crosscut shredder I was bought 2yrs ago. One year guarantee on the cutter mechanism. Relatively small bin, but as it cuts so finely don't see that as a problem for a tenner.

Two Aldi's I been into in the last week had a £19.99 crosscut shredder rated at 7 sheets of paper and able to shred credit-cards too. From the size of the box was larger capacity bin. Again I've had very good experiences of Aldi products and anyway if you don't like them within the first year you just take them back with your receipt and get a full refund. Which is a better deal than any other store I know in the UK!

Personally if I was a regular householder I'd be happy with the £9.99 Staples one; but as a 'volume user' (an accountant with hundreds of accounts) I'd spend the extra for the Aldi, but then I don't know the Big W one....
  • I bought the Big W one before Christmas. It was on special offer then for £14.99 and I bought it on their 10% off day, so it was only about £13. It's excellent - is a cross-cut shredder and shreds credits cards. I keep searching for bits of paper to shred for the fun of it!!
  • for anyone near coventry, the Big W is closing down for good (boo hoo!!!) :-[

they have a number of discounts, with most things 20% off - if your passing, it may be worth the trip to have a look at what they have got - it may include the crosscut shredders
