Oxo jug and fat separator

Options
I have already started a thread on "dustcatcher" gadgets but today we have been cooking duck and saving the fat from it.

It reminded me to tell you about a really useful bit of kit. This is the Oxo Good Grips Fat Separator:

http://www.oxo.com/OA_HTML/xxoxo_ibeCCtpOXOPrdDtl.jsp?a=b&item=48383

It is a measuring jug which has metric and imperial liquid measures on one side and American cup sizes on the other. Its spout starts at the bottom so you can use it for straining fat etc. and it has a lid with holes to help with sieving out the larger bits from your stock etc.

It also comes with a rubber bung so that the fat does not go up the spout as you pour your stock in.

The reason I like it though is that it is not just a fat separator but can also be used for measuring out rice and other dried ingredients for your pressure cooker or for American cake recipes etc. and you can use it as a general kitchen jug (although it is not microwave safe). Its 1 litre or 4 US cup size makes it ideal for most measuring jobs.

Looks good. I just pour the fat into a bowl and when it sets put the fat in the bin instead of down the sink.
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
    Spring begins on 21st March.
  • Yes, that's what I do with chicken or lamb fat etc. But if we're talking goose or duck fat, that is carefully perserved in a jar in the fridge. It is supposed to be "healthier" than other fats including butter etc. and tastes good as well. Try frying an egg in it, and you'll see what I mean.

See this link for why duck fat is OK, and how to store it etc.

Even supermarket ducks (poor sad things!) have lots of good white fat in the skin and this renders out beautifully in a frying pan or when separated out from a stock.

Thanks, I have often thought of getting one and wondered if they were worthwhile.

I've got one - like the one in the OP's link - it's very good - definitely a worthwhile piece of kit - think I got it from TK Max..

I bought one of these gravy oil separator thingies

the other day, thought it would be healthy and useful. I tried it tonight but while first bit worked OK, once the gravy dropped below a certain point then it poured out of top of jug instead of spout. Anyone had similar problems? Where am I going wrong?
  • I've got one of these and it's really useful especially to just to tip in the roast chicken juices and pour out just the good stuff.

You're not doing anything wrong, it's just the slight limitation in the design and also depends how much fat you have on top, the more fat, the more likely a bit of spillage. You may have to sacrifice the last little bit of gravy and not tip the jug so far, or spoon a bit of fat off so there isn't as much. Trial and error I'm afraid.

  • I also find it useful to strain whatever juices into it through a sieve cos if you get any 'bits' they clog up the hole at the bottom which can sometimes them force the liquid over the top!

Nope. I just poor the fat etc... into a dish and wait for the fat to set before I spoon it into the bin. Any liquid then goes down the sink. I use Bisto to make my gravy.

    Hi Maman

Sorry I can't advise myself as I've not encountered one myself. There is a thread about a similar type of object, so I will add your thread to that one later to keep the information together

thanks - hope you get the hang of it. :)
