I was wondering if it is possible to claim tax back if i pay subscription fees to a professional body.

I have heard something about this before but am not to sure about this or tax in general to be honest.

Thanks for any help/advice

  • In general, an individual can claim income tax relief on subscriptions to professional bodies, provided that the body is on the Inland Revenue list of approved organisations.

This list can be found here
  • I checked and the organisation is on their list.
How do i claim it an what will i recieve.
    Thanks

As far as I understand it you can call your tax office and they will add it to your tax code.

I have two allowable subscriptions and, in both instances, the tax office need to have sight of the PAID invoice [they are buggers aren't they?]. Then they'll amend your tax code.

Mind you, you should remember to send off the invoices in subsequent years - because your subs will undoubtedly go up. I tend not to bother every year, but do it every 3-5 years.
  • sounds good, better i get it, than them

    Thanks
  • I have two professional subscriptions and I have never been asked for sight of the invoices in order to claim a deduction.

Maybe you have a trusting - or niaive - clerk within your local tax office, Brantwood. I know several people, with the same subscription as me, who get their employers to pay the subscription as part of the salary deal. Some of them still claim tax relief, even though they don't pay it themselves!

I make no comment one way or the other on the morals of such action, but you can see why some of the sharper Revenue staff would want proof of payment.
  • The good thing for me is that i pay it then claim it back whilst getting to keep the original invoice

    Hi,

Don't know if this will keep its formatting, but here goes. This was adapted from one I found online. Replace the italized items and cross out the unwanted starred items. Ive just claimed and am awaiting a chq.

NB: If you ask for a chq, you may need to enclose your most recent P60 as well.

    Dear Sir/Madam

CLAIM FOR STATUTORY FEES OR CONTRIBUTIONS AND ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTIONS YearX to YearY.

I would like to make a claim under the Income Tax Act 1988, Section 201 as above regarding my annual membership fee paid to the (society name here). I understand 100% of this fee may be claimed as tax relief.

As this tax relief is applicable up to six years in arrears, I am claiming for YearX to YearY a sum totaling £xx.xx. I attach *a letter of confirmation of subscription amounts from the (society name here) / *receipts for the amounts claimed.

I declare that the information I have given above is correct to the best of my knowledge and belief. I pay the amount shown out of my earnings and claim the deduction due.

I understand that if I am claiming tax relief prior to the current tax year, I will be paid either by adjustment to my tax code or by cheque. Please refund my fee by *sending a lump sum in the form of a cheque (I enclose my most recent P60) / *adjusting to my tax code / *sending a lump sum for YearX to YearY and adjusting my tax code for the current tax year (I enclose my most recent P60).

    Yours faithfully
