These are a great way to protect and save money (by reducing electrical
waste) on your computer or audio/visual set ups. Usually retail at £29.99,
but if you buy direct from Powergen, they are currently charging £14.95.
Their website displays £18.49, but when I rang up to order they said they
were at this new price, so I snapped up 2! Delivery takes a while though - still waiting!!

Powergen, in association with One Click Technologies, are able to offer you
a product called the Intelligent Mains Panel (IMP). This revolutionary idea
reduces electricity wasted by computers and their associated peripherals.
To avoid the hassle of switching on and off each peripheral most people
leave equipment on stand-by. However, recent research has shown that
peripherals left on stand-by can use in excess of 35 watts per hour. The
IMP eliminates this wastage by automatically turning off all your connected
equipment when you shut down and can more than pay for itself during its
long life span. It will also significantly increase the life-span of your
computer equipment and reduce the risks to your family of a potential fire.
The built-in surge protection protects your whole system too.
The IMP is recognised by the Energy Saving Trust through its Energy
Endorsement scheme, for its proven contribution to significantly reducing
the power consumption of desktop computer systems. For more information
about the product you can visit https://www.oneclickpower.co.uk.

As the article says, your peripherals can use over 35 watts per hour on standby. According to their website, the IMP uses 0.6 watts, so that's a pretty big saving.0 -
for one thing my pc never goes off becuase it takes up so much power loading the pc up and also much more time and loads programs that you dont want loaded to. So this divice does nothing for me. I go on my pc over 6 hours min a day, so turning it off would save a little money but time is money lol.Kind Regards

You could amend the startup list?
and powering down your PC will also prolong its life - more saving!0 -

I think you are wrong here, powering down your PC (or Mac) does not prolong its life. Powering up a PC puts extra strain on components, it will last a lot longer if you leave it on, or in standby, all the time.

Yes it is the temperature change that stresses components, which is why turning your machine off at the end of the day is fine, but doing it repeatedly through the day is a bad idea..
My problem with this device is that if it does indeed shut off all the power to the connected devices, my VCR will lose its settings, as will anything else with short-term or no non-volatile memory, plus my PC will be using up the CMOS battery quicker and when that flattens I'm stuffed!
Why not simply turns things off when you're not using them, rather than using stand-by at all?0 -
How many years has this thing got to work to recoup the £18 or so outlay for it in saved electricity?I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.0

LatIn October I received a letter from Powergen saying that if I sent the form back, I could get one of these free. It took 6 weeks to turn up, but I got it, totally free from Powergen!
It is very good, and as for the above debate, they are all right in a way, but it all depends on how much you use your PC. A lot of people I know use there PCs at home less often than once a day, then, it would be worth turning it off. But if your someone like me who never really goes an hour without looking, then yes, it is best left on.
I think the average amount saved with one of these things is about £30-40, so you would recoup in less than a year. But with the prices of TFT monitors, the same can almost be said for them, but a lot of people with old CRTs think that 'flat screens' are non-essential. But beleive me, they do a lot more than look good!0
