Just read an article about a book published by Martin Isark - the Supermarket Own Brand Guide - which rates own labels against leading named brands for taste, value & quality as well as a number of health factors. "The guide is the result of exhaustive tasting and analysis of over 2000 food and drink products from the 10 leading supermarkets" He could have saved himself a job and just looked on some of the threads on here:D
Might see if I can borrow a copy from the libary though.
Does have a comparison for shopping in Tescos I'll copy some of it out if anyone's interested
Article was in today's Western Mail

Sorry but copying out from a book would be against the MSE copyright rules:)
You are permitted to link to a website though.0 -
I've got a copy of this book and it makes interesting reading, but I believe there is an updated version coming out which will include Lidl. I've finished with my copy so if anyone would like it please pm me with your address and I'll post it to you (if you promise to pass it onto another moneysaver when you've read it
)

Can't we do our own 'own brand guide' here?
I like Sainsbury's basic tomatoes - better than Asda's or Tescos -- really juicy
But Sainsbury's mandarins are full of pips - Asda's are better value
Asda or Tesco porridge is OK but you need to ensure that Asda's in not 'dusty' (though they will give money back if it is) - Sainsbury's though nice is pricey compared to the other two.
Asda's tissues are bit harsh - I prefer Netto's
I'm sure we can all pull together a best of the smart price / value range / basics list.Enjoying an MSE OS life0 -
aldi plum tomatoes are far superior to tescos value ones.....they are in nice thick puree lovely for blending into a pasta sauce....tescos are watery0

Lidl's chopped tomatoes are loads better (imo) than the Sainburys basics ones and they both cost 15p. Considering that they are the same price there is no way that I would buy the Sainsburys ones again for as long as the Lidl ones remain the same price. The Sainsburys ones are very watery, they don't even resemble tomatoes for me.
Of course you could always get the plum tomatoes from Lidl which are 13p per can.0 -
Here's the rules on copyright. We can't post from the book, but as Edinburghlass say, we can link to websites. And our own comparison sounds like a good idea.
Morrisons' value cornflakes are very powdery tasting but Netto's are the same price and taste as good as Morrison's own (not value) at twice the price.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
This is all very well, but how does anyone know that the author's idea of what tastes best is the same as anyone else's? The nutritional information is ok to compare, but who is to say that what he rates high for taste is nicer than something he rates lower?
I know a chap who would only eat sunblest cornflakes - can't stand kellogs, whereas my DH can only eat kellogs. That doesn't mean one is better than the other, or tastes better than the other, that is just a matter of personal preference.0
