Please help us: MERCERS (Ugh)

*I have tried hard to read down as far as possible to see if this is covered so apologies if it was - my eyes went square.*

My name is Tania (hello to you all)

My partner owes £6000 each on 2 barclaycards (total £12,000) accrued before we met when he didn't have a job and used these to get by (perhaps a little too well in my opinion but thats beside the point!!)

I won't post all our circumstances here unless requested but our problem is with Mercers.
He had to lower my partners monthly repayments due to our dire financial situtation (I am a new mother whose maternity pay ran out in december) and he is on just above minimum wage.

This has been explained time and time again to Mercers who were passed the debt because I guess Barclays thought £50 per card per month was not enough.
Since then, Mercers have mounted a campaign of harassment. Agreeing on his £50 pc/pm and then reneging - telling us that the person who agreed it was not authorised to do so.

They have been calling our landline at 8:30pm on several times despite me telling them they were waking our baby and that they should stop.
They even called my partner on his mobile and tried to force him to give his debit card details over a mobile phone conversation?!!! erm hello??!!!

Anyway - I have made a complaint to OFT/Trading standards which was to be upheld but they could not continue without a registered address for Mercers.
We have asked Mercers for an address but all they will give is a p.o box number in Liverpool stating that "they have no other address"
Having looked on companies house, it looks to me like they are in the EC1 Area of london (very close to Barclays..hmmm)

Can anyone tell me if they have a useable registered address for mercers the merciless that can be used by OFT/trading standards as, the way I see it Mercers are impeding our perfectly legitimate attempts to make an official complaint by not providing a proper address.

As for letters - despite several requests by my partner, Mercers still have NEVER contacted my partner by letter, so we have no letterheaded paper for an address either.

please can you help as they are causing a lot of undue stress and upset -we are trying to pay as much as we can (in fact more than we can afford) and I cant live in fear of answering my phone all the time.
Many thanks if you got this far and well done!

Kind regards,
Tania

Do you have their phone number? If so get their number barred from calling you. Then they'll be forced to write and you'll get some peace as well as their address.

  • Hi there, many thanks for your quick reply.

The first time they called, it was from a Liverpool number. Since then they call from a withheld number. I can't bar these as it would stop me getting calls from too many people I know (including partner's work phone)
If it werent for that, I'd block all withheld numbers.

Do you know if I tried barring the Liverpool number, that would work?
When called my mobile service provider, they told me they were unable to bar numbers (e.g the goold on 071 numbers)
    Perhaps it's different for landlines?
  • your service provider will bar numbers if you fully explain the situation to them and that the amount of calls you are receiving could be classed as abuse, the same goes for the landline

even explain to them the fact that you are going to TS as this will show you are trying to lodge official complaints about them, if you get a sympathetic person on the phone they will do it, keep trying and until then stay strong :)

BT offer a service where you can block specific numbers from calling you, even if that number is a withheld one. It only blocks that particular number so other withheld numbers will still be able to phone you. I think it's called choose to refuse. After you end the unwanted call you pick the phone back up and dial a short number (bt tell you what it is) and it blocks all calls from there on from that number.

It costs a couple of quid a month but worth it if you don't want to change your phone number.

If you stop answering the calls they will have to write to you in the end ;)

I hope this helps - Mercers operate out of the barclaycard building in liverpool which is...

Norwich Way, Kirkby, Liverpool, L33 3QU

I'd send it recorded delivery to be sure they get it - when you know they do, you can surely use that as an address?
  • A big thank you to everyone. I will be using the advice given on every reply. You're all stars and I really appreciate your help.
    And thanks for the address.
    Kind regards,
    Tania.

If you have no luck with the address above then you could contact PAYPLAN who have Mercers listed as the collection agancy for Barclays on the Paypaln website and maybe able to give you an address

  • I have read on here before that it looks like they are in fact a part of barclays.
Having researched them a few weeks back, I read (on another forum) that they share an address with Barclaycards data controllers?
sadly they didn't post what the address actually was!

*edited to say thanks save-alot and moonrose -I wasn't sure if I could use that ropemaker street address or not. and If you and I can find it on the web, why cant they give it when we requested it - grrrrrr*
