Is this a Hot Flush ?

Options
Last night I woke up feeling very agitated. Couldn't get back to sleep so I went downstairs to get something to drink, I was feeling thirsty.

On the way back up I started to feel dizzy and nauseous, I thought maybe I needed to go the loo, but no it wasnt that.

Instead I started to feel very strange and unwell, and then my whole body started to tingle and I think I started to sweat. After about a total of 5 minutes, it all settled down and I was able to go back to sleep.

My partner touched me during this episode and said I didnt feel hot. The whole experience was very scary, probably made worse by he fact I was half asleep. This was the second time it has happened, the first time was about 4 weeks ago.

I am only 43. Surely this can't be the start of the Menopause ? I use the Mirena Coil so I don't have any periods.

This used to happen to me about 3 times a year, always in the middle of the night. I used to get up, go into another room, open the window wide and lie down. I stayed there til I was really cold then the feeling would be gone. The doc put it down to panic attacks though how do have a panic attack when you're asleep?

It hasn't happened again for 3-4 years.

    I would get a check-up with the doc :)

    I'll answer you backwards.

I am 44. I started the menopause three years ago. My main side effect is the hot flushes and although everyone is different, mine are nothing like you describe. However, about a year into the peri-menopause (the years before the actual menopause happens) I started feeling nauseous in the same way I had when I was pregnant. That passed after about six months.

Even if this is early menopause, you should perhaps see your doctor to have a blood test to make sure. Some of the menopause symptoms mimic those of thyroid problems. Don't be fobbed off by being told you are too young for the menopause. I am proof you are not and I have pm'd you the details of a really useful website I use from which you will see that menopause in this age group seems to be quite common.

I get this too and think it is a blood sugar level thing (at least in my case) as it happens when I excercise and especially if Ive had no breakfast. I now have peanut butter on toast for breakfast ,when we are going cycling as protein combined with carbohydrate is meant to help and it seems to be helping .Ive had this since I was a child though (so does my daughter ,though to a lesser extent) so I dont think it is menopausal.
My sister said they sounded like her panic attacks but Im not the panicky kind so dont think so.

went to the GP this morning, and she suggested blood tests to rule out problems, including thyroid problems and for hormone tests.

So should know by the begining of June. Couldn't get in for an 8.30 appt with the nurse for the blood tests till the end of May !!

I get them sometimes but not a great problem - it is better than what I had to endure before
