I ordered one of these yesterday after seeing it mentioned on another board and it has just arrived this morning, very quick service.

I only hope that I don't get too much of a shock when I try it out on various appliances to see how much electric I am using

I have one of these and combine it with the Owl wireless monitor. Total cost £43 and I'm on course for a 30% usage reduction this year. Recommended.

I have one but I haven't figured out how to use it yet - the instructions are worse than useless. Any tips gratefully received...

What does that do? More to the point, how does it help you cut your electricty use by 30%?

In itself it doesn't cut ANY electricity but what it DOES do is constantly monitor your electricity usage and give a constant visual readout (you set your pence per kwh charge and it gives you a pence per hour charge)! This really does bring home to you how much certain things you do impact on the bill you ultimately get each month!

They are certainly not for everybody (there are at least 2 posters on the Gas & Electricity forum who seem to feel people who use the Owl are in some way mentally challenged and to be ridiculed at every opportunity but they are 2 very strange individuals indeed  ). It's common sense, I suppose, if you use high-draw electrical items for a long time you will get a big bill. Having said that, common sense isn't actually that common :D and most humans need a constant visual reminder of things in order to get them to change their behaviour - saving electricity is no different. I bought one today. I have gone around my house and plugged in each appliance and made notes on how much it is costing me to leave things on or in standby. It has made me aware of the electric usage and rough costs of not switching off appliances. It was a bit of fun and I should easily cover the cost of this unit by using my new found self awareness.

Seeing as I turn everything off that is not use anyway there is no point for me to buy one of these or the owl system either.

If it helps you become more aware then I suppose it is good thing. But for me personally seems a waste of money.

    Each to your own.
