My mother has requested a book that will teach her to crochet, is idiot proof and will teach her, to crochet the way you teach a small child to tie it's shoe laces. She really did ask for something that simple. Any thoughts would be gratefully received.

just be aware that most of the reviews complain of mistakes in the patterns of her books!0

There is a great site
http://learntocrochet.lionbrand.com/
I've downloaded all instructions and it has come out like a book, all ready to print, put them in a folder with the pages in plastic wallets and - et voila - a book on crochet.
I want to crochet a cardigan, but was nervous, I think with this I could have a practice and make a start. On the homepage, there are hundreds of lovely patterns for different things.0 -
I'm having a browse round the internet this afto and I've discovered theis site with a download book.

It's amazing that it's all out there, no reason to buy books for so many things.0 -
I learnt to crochet from a ladybird book. I'm sure there will be one out there still somewhere....0

Ohhh! memories, my Grandma taught me to crochet, and she died when I was eight. I think my Mum reminded me later, and I did quite a lot at one bit, still can, though haven't for a while. Remember making a long waistcoat in the 70's which was made up of squares of differing colours with a black background, you just joined them together. It was very simple starting with a chain to make a circle then groups of 3 double crochets, with 3 chains in between, increasing the quanity each row.

Why is it I have less time now I am retired then when I worked?0 -
Bumping this thread, as I'm just starting learning to crochet. I've started by using this set of instructions. Does anyone else have favourite books?

Penny - i tried to teach a friend crochet last year while she was staying with us. Then, for Christmas, I sent her via Amazon this book called "the happy hooker". My friend now says this book is brilliant and makes it all perfectly clear. So much for my teaching efforts! But you may want to check that one out."Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0 -
I definitely second the recommendation for the Happy Hooker, loads of really good patterns in there too. I've used it lots.0
