How have you benefited from drinking Kefir?

Options
I have been making Kefir for the past two weeks. As it's so disgusting on its own I disguise it in a fruit smoothie which tastes great!

I am curious to know what those of you who are still making/drinking it think about it's benefits? Does it cure bloating, improve digestion, help IBS etc...?

Sorry KittyKat did not mean to press the thanks button. I used to drink Kefir, was madly passionate about it at one stage, but like all my routines, it fell apart.

Like you I had to disguise it as I never enjoyed it on its own. I did think at the time that I felt better, but I am not sure how much of that was psychological or the fact that I was actually in a routine.

It will be interesting to hear how other people feel about it. My grains are languishing in the fridge and have been there for about six months. They still seem fine.

    Thanks Larmy.

My son especially seems less 'windy' and I don't think I'm as bloated as I used to be but that could be down to eating less bread.

I was hoping to go to the loo a bit more - but that isn't a side effect so far.

Actually Kitty I do remember it helping with going to the loo - it made me v. regular! I really should get my grains going again. Even if it is psychological, I do remember feeling v. good about using such a natural product!

I tried some a few weeks ago.... found it a bit weird, but inoffensive. I'd really like to get into the health benefits of it and find out more about it. Also, anyone on here in S E Berks got a sample of the culture they could pass on to me, pretty please? PM me thanks

    Hi Mariel,

You don't sound stupid....I didn't know either until I read this thread:

Kefir making as alternative to yoghurt making.

It seems from the response that most people must have given up! Oh well I'm happy to carry on and hope to boost my immunity which is severely compromised at the mo!

I still have my pot of kefir on the go and use it every day with my cereal. I've used it in smoothies and I like it in cheese sauce or white sauce.
I'm not sure to what extent my improved immune status is due to the kefir and what comes from having optimal Vitamin d status (4000iu/daily) I suspect it's the better Vitamin D status that really has cleared up my UTI's but as I like the kefir, as it costs nowt to make and is simply putting a bit of life back into our pasturised milk, it seems worth the effort of shaking the kefir grains into a sieve and moving them into a new jar of milk every few days and using the new kefir in my cereal/cooking.
I also regularly make/use probiotic yoghurt and I think that helps as well.Yogurt

Tried it for 9 months, did nothing to improve IBS condition at all, didn't mind the taste of it actually but didn't work for me.
One day I might be more organised...........
