:j :j Yay, what fun!! Wanted to firstly say thanks, for the jam making tips and secondly, where do you guys get your jars, tops and so on from?
My dad got me some dinky little kilner type jars, meant for spices but look cute with jamm in, I even typed some fancy labels up for them. I caled it "conserve" rather than Jam as I thought it sounded a bit more posh! Don't know the difference, if there is one? I'm bitten by the jam-making bug! Going to look into making batches to selll at the local art mart maybe next year! Jam makings great ( apart from the big fat burn of it spitting at me!!)
Jam makers of the world- I salute you!!:A :A

Congratulations SHH! It's SO much better than shop bought.
Conserve usually has whole pieces of fruit in.
Jam Jars: well, I get mine from Ascott Smallholding supplies http://www.ascott.biz/cat121_1.htm because I make quite a lot of preserves during the year. However, you can also buy them in smaller quantites from Lakeland (which is what I used to do). http://www.lakelandlimited.co.uk/product.aspx/!3819_3818
Both companies sell replacement lids too.
Cheaper option is to ask people to save jars for you, or put a WANTED posting on your local Freecycle group.
Happy jamming!0 -
I just keep all the empty jars from all sorts of things for my jam and pickle. They need a really good clean as some of the lids pong a bit, and you don't want your lovely raspberry jam wiffing of tomato and garlic sauce
You cannot live as I have lived an not end up like me.

When you make jam, never use the tops from jars that have had vinegary things in, you can never get rid of the pong and it spoils the jam. Also, I never use those greasproof jam pot covers, I just fill the jar right up to the brim with the hot jam and use a screw cap. Filling the jam right to the top causes a vacuum and so, no air, no mould! Congratulations on finding pleasure in jam making, you will never BUY jam again!0

I have Bob Marley days too (we're jammin').
Since you ask, conserve is made with whole fruit, or at least, large pieces of fruit whereas jam is crushed or broken down fruit0 -

You can buy jars online at https://www.freemanharding.co.uk, they have been really helpful with me. They also sell spare lids as you can re use the jars but should always have new lids.0

Yes sammy you can. Cut out any bruised bits and then weigh what you have left. As a rough guide use and equal amount of sugar to fruit. You can use special jam sugar but I use plain old granulated.
I have been making jam for years. I just re-use any glass jars I have around for my jams and chutneys. The jams I cover with a double layer of cling film. The chutneys have the lid added as well. Most of the time it turns out well and now it is in much demand to take back to uni but some times I have been known to have a disaster such as boiling it well past setting point and making what can only be described as cherry toffee:o which I am sure would have been lovely if only we could have got it OUT of the jars:rotfl:
Enjoy your jam making cos there is a lovely feeling of having a cupboard full of your creations that are ready for you to give away as a thoughtful home made gift.True wealth lies in contentment - not cash. Dollydaydream 20060
