yesterday i had my first ever stab at making jam using a small bag of blackberries my son had picked from the back garden and 2 braeburn apples, i tipped the blackberries onto the scales and added chopped apples untill it weighed 1 llb then put the fruit in a large saucepan with a little water and simmered untill the fruit was soft mashed it with the potato masher into smallish bits then added 1lb of sugar and boiled it untill it thickened up which took about 4/5 mins, keep stirring it though so it doesnt stick. then poured it into 2 warm sterilised jam jars and hey presto homemade jam:j :T it tastes gorgeous even if i do say so myself:D apparantly if you use apples they have pectin in them so you dont need to buy proper jam making sugar to make it thicken up. after my success yesterday it has given me the confidance to do a big batch so thats my mission for the weekend:j

forgot to say be careful with the little uns helping as boiling sugar is mighty hot and can give a nasty burn as it bubbles and spits, best of luck and happy jam making

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
1 lb of sugar to every lb of fruit, put in large pan, heat gently till sugar disolved, boil rapidly till setting point reached, to test for this chill a saucer, put tsp jam on side leave 2-3min if forms a skin and wrinkles when pused setting point is reached, if so pot into hot jars if not continue boiling and testing till ready, good luck! can also put elderberries and apples in
