  • Backup, backup, backup!! The importance of this basic computing housekeeping task cannot be stressed enough. Hard drives do fail! Imagine losing all your pics, music, videos, important financial and other files etc!

    Web storage /cloud storage is hailed as the next big thing. It also allows sharing and collaboration. It circumvents need for a raft of CD/DVDs/external hard drives, although transfer can be slow. Also, consider is the company likely to go bust, and if so would you maybe lose all your backed up files?

    It is said, online storage by free provides is like using a memory stick. Some people say quality CDs/DVDs are better than some ext hard drives. Online storage gives you option of worldwide file access theoretically.

    Several companies have in recent times have reduced free storage volume or started charging.

    A strategy may be to use 2 online providers and maybe weekly/monthly backup to ext hard drive/optical media - CDs/DVDs.

    :TAdrive.com gives more storage, 50Gb, but some may find interface not so easy to use - nothing major, really. Adrive looks quite corporate too.You have to use new window if want to work on other stuff during upload. You can, though, upload directories, transfer remote files etc. With humyo, 10Gb, you can use other tabs at same time, it's won many awards, recommendations also.

    Many other free sites if do web search [Google /other search engine etc.] - Esnips [5Gb], Mozy [2Gb]. Others, may not be entirely free - Ibackup, Xdrive [closing service 12 Jan-09!!!!], Carbonite, Drivehq [not free, but recommended by some], Windows' Skydrive, 5Gb free, Google, c.7Gb+ free, also check out Google's other free apps - docs, notebook, bookmarks etc.
    :money::rolleyes:
  • Mmmm. Interested in principle. But the free Adrive option doesn't encrypt your files. I like the idea, but I'm not going to back up my personal stuff to an unsecure site.
