People keep phoning up....

.... telling me about this great, new, virtually unheard of piece of Government Legislation which will allow me to wipe out a massive proportion of debt ...... usually having the name, Sebastian, John etc etc, all of home seem to have an Indian Accent (thats just my opinion) - names and accents dont seem to match at all.

Is there anyway I can get these companys to stop phoning (am already ex d and TPS registered) can only assume they have gained my details from some application I made a whille back.

    Or along the same lines:

"Hello. Office of the Information Commissioner - Direct marketing Investigations and enforcement. How can I help you?" :D

This might help. But may not be useful if they are not UK based.

The Information Commissioner is getting annoyed with these people now!

Automated calls about debt – ICO statement
    Tuesday 6 May 2008

    Automated calls about debt

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) is currently receiving large numbers of complaints about automated telephone calls referring to ‘debt reduction schemes’ or ‘government debt initiatives’. The messages usually ask the recipient to press ‘5’ for more information.

Under the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003 organisations should not make automated marketing calls unless they have prior consent.

The ICO’s Enforcement Team is currently investigating to establish who is responsible for making these calls.

If you have received an automated call referring to a debt reduction scheme or initiative, and have been able to obtain any specific information about the company calling, such as:

    • the telephone number that the call came from,
    • the full name of the company used in the call or,
    • you spoke to an actual person during the call and they provided you with any information, please complete one of our Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations complaint forms. These are available through the following link.

We will make details of any formal action we take available on this site.

For all media enquires, please contact the ICO press office on 0207 025 7580.
For all general enquires, please contact the ICO customer service team on 08456 306060.

I had another one today - ended up he wanted to get a credit card off me. I just hung up. Pretty sure the company was G and C, GMC maybe, something like that - and it did flash up international call.
