Gain Weight!!

Options
Hello

I would like to know of any tips, websites, books etc that show me how to GAIN WEIGHT, yes you read it correctly, GAIN WEIGHT. I'm 6ft 3in, just turning 30 and only weigh 11st approx, I've been that way for a year previous to that I was only just over 10st. My diet is so so, I eat a reasonable amount of chocolate, have atleast one decent meal a day and as I work for a well known 'quick service' restaurant then get to eat that type of food too. Whereever I look the TV or websites are always showing you how to lose weight as the nation is going obese, I on the other hand am not and would like to get near to the 13st am suppose to be as written down on paper by the Boots weighting machine.

Any tips or links are received gratefully.

Warrior - it's good that you want to be a healthy weight but check with a few sources before you decide what your target weight is.

I just typed in your height and 11stone weight into the nhs bmi calculator and it reckons you're at a healthy weight. Obviously this isn't necessarily the definative guide but it's a good place to start. There are always various other factors to take into account!http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/interactiveTools/bmi.aspx

Talk to your doctor if you're really worried about being underweight. S/he'll be able to help determine whether you're at a healthy weight and may be able suggest changes to your diet should you need to.

I would advise you to try and change what you want as well. I don't mean to sound patronising but perhaps you should be aiming to eat healthily rather than just 'to gain weight'. Why aren't you having 3 decent meals a day?!

Good luck. I'm overweight and this sucks too but I'm doing my best to sort it!
  • Hi Warriorsith. Do you smoke? Only if you do, try and give up, my hubby was in your position and after giving up he has put on two stone in four years and looks much better for the extra weight. If you don't smoke then I think the suggestions above sound good to me, your doctor may be able to help and there are products out there for weight gain. I only wish I had your problem, I am so envious!!!

I know the feeling- although I've bulked up a little in the last year I find it really irritating that women's magazines think its ok to sl@g people off for being too thin (they MUST be starving themselves!) to re-assure their "curvy" readers!
I'm not a nutritionist but from experience, some things that help:
    - eating fast food and chocolate WON'T help. Junk food won't put the weight on as it has no nutritional value. Its only when (certain) people eat junk on top of a normal diet that it puts on pounds. Plus it'll mess your skin up and leave you with no energy. If your diet consists of junk that's most likely the reason you're underweight (remmber pics of Jordan looking skinny a few years ago? Supposedly she lived off takeaways at the time)
    - lots of carbs and proteins will help. Try to do pretty much the oppossite of the Atkins diet and fill up on loads of pasta, rice, bread, potatoes, porridge, lentils, pulses etc.
-Add powdered milk to casseroles to up calorie content
    - make fruit smoothies and milkshakes with full fat cream, yoghurt and milk. You can also add wheatgerm for a fibre boost.
    - Try to eat your three meals a day, even if its only a sandwich or soup. Add as many ingredients as you possibly can. Soups are great as you can "hide" ingredients in them (lentils and beans are good here too- and you can also add dairy products)
-Make sure you exercise. I know burning calories sounds counterproductive, but if you don't it'll all turn to flab in the wrong places- once you've got it you need to tone it. Things like yoga and pilates or martial arts are good for this.

I can help here - I went form 10 odd stone about four years ago to a much healthier looking 13 stone at 6 foot one.

The best thing you can do is to eat more. Daft as it sounds - thats the key to it all. Don't jam food down yourself three times a day though - you'll hate it.

Rule 1 - Have a good breakfast!!!! Breakfast is a major element to not starving your body. Your system is starved of food when you get up, and if you don't feed it, it'll cut into energy deposits such as muscle and fat.

Rule 2 - Eat five or six times a day. Not as scary as it sounds. I have brekky (tends to be a complex carbs such as wholegrain followed by a yoghurt or something). Mid morning I have a wee snack such as a slim fast shake (no laughing at the back - it's good protein!) or a healthy flapjack. Off to Boots for Lunch (Gotta load up that Advantage card). Noodles and duck, 3pm is snack time again - I buy organic snack bars in bulk plus a protein bar. 6pm is dinnertime - keep it healthy again! Pasta and chicken or turkey or shrimp. New potatoes maybe. Yams and sweet potato go down well too. 9pm is snack time, and the one time I may cheat with a touch of ice cream with some fruit. Finally (after the gym) I get a pot of cottage cheese down me before bedtime.

Now I'm on high protein because of my gym work, so don't be put off by the shakes and things I chuck in there. Just thihnk healthy and the weight will come, and it'll be good weight too. Drop the choccy, any too fatty stuff such as chips etc and replace it with food which is better for you. Your body will appreciate the higher quality food you are giving it, and the fact it is at more regular intervals (which our bodies are designed for) will improve your health no end.

Anything else, please feel free to ask!

Any more weight gain tips? I think I may buy a bulk load of whey off the internet somewhere. Perhaps that'll help.
If I had words to make a day for you,
I'd sing you a morning golden and new.
I would make this day last for all time,

I've plenty going spare around my middle if that helps!!

My DH has this problem. Rather than eat 3 square meals he was advised to eat little and often, approx every 3 hours - but not junk, proper food - sandwiches, pasta, rice, vegetables etc.. Good Luck
