What do Indian people have for dessert?
We're having people over at the weekend for a curry, and I wanted to make an authentic Indian dessert for afterwards. Any suggestions and recipes welcome.

Here I go again on my own....

Hi! I love coconut icecream we get at our local indian restaurant, not sure of a recipe though. I have got this recipe from my Hare Krishna Higher Taste recipe book which I thought might be useful.
Ingredients - 6 cups of milk, 3/4 cup of rice, 1/2 cup of raisins, 1/4 teaspoon of fresh cardamom powder, 1/2 bay leaf, 1/2 cup of turbinado sugar
In large saucepan, combine milk, rice and bay leaf. Cook on high heat for about 15 minutes, stirrng very frequently. Bring to a rolling boil and then lower heat. Simmer for 40 more minutes until it thickens. Remove bay leaf and add sugar, raisins and cardamom. Refrigerate until cold. Kheer thickens as it cools. Serve cool. (Serves 4)
Hth, I'll keep my eye out for more! Lucy0 -
Also found this one!
Semolina Burfi
Ingredients
50g (2oz) fine semolina, 125g (4oz) sugar, 450ml (3/4 pint) milk, 50g (2oz) butter, 10 cardamom peeled and crushed, 75g (3oz) blanched almonds, halved and toasted (possibly use almond flakes if you're busy??)
Place the semolina and sugar in a heavy based saucepan and stir in the milk gradually until smooth. Add the butter in small pieces. Bring to the boil, stirring, then simmer for 3 to 4 minutes until thickened, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Add the cardamom and continue cooking for another 10 minutes until the mixture leaves the side of the pan.
Spread on a buttered plate or dish to a thickness of 1 to 1.5 cm. Leave until almost cold, then decorate with the almonds.
Serve cold, cut into slices or squares.0 -

The Tesco at Batley (near us in West Yorkshire) is fab for Asian stuff. They have ready made Indian desserts too, and all the ingredients you need at half the price and twice the quantity you'd buy them in the other supermarkets round here. Well worth finding where your nearest supplier of stuff is, we also have an Asian stall on our local market which sells all sorts of lovely things.
There was a link on one of those recipe sites to an online shop which sold ready made desserts at a reasonable price, too.
Good luck, let us know what you decide to make and how it goes!0 -
How about some Kulfi icecream? Heres one from the back of my packet of East End ground almonds (I dont think they'll mind me posting it as they might get some sales out of it). Sounds like it might take a while to make, but I bet the results are superb! This makes 2.5 litres. I've been meaning to make some myself, but the new baby is taking up a lot of my spare time.
Good luck if you use it!
Ingredients:
8 3/4 pints of full fat ice-cream
2 large pinches of saffron
10.5oz sugar
8-10 cardamon pods skinned and crushed
2oz Ground Almonds (East End naturally)
Method:
Dissolve the saffron in 2 tablespoons of milk. Place the remaining milk in a saucepan over a moderate heat and stir continuously until it has reduced by half. Add the sugar and stir to dissolve. Add the saffron, cardamon and ground almonds and blend throughly. Remove from the heat and cool. Pure mixture in freezer trays and freeze for at least 6 hours.SIMPLE SIMON - Met a pie man going to the fair. Said Simple Simon to the pie man, "What have you got there?" Said the pie man unto Simon, "Pies, you simpleton!"0 -
