How do you keep coriander fresh?

I love coriander and buy big bunches of it from the Asian supermarket. Even though I use loads, sometimes I have to store it for a few days - and, invariably, it tends to go slimey. Anybody know how to keep it fresh? The stuff I buy sometimes still has the roots on, sometimes not. I have tried standing it in a jar of water or keeping it in the fridge, but it doesn't seem to last more than a few days. Thanks in advance :D.

I know exactly what you mean Frugalista, mine goes like that. I buy mine fresh from an Asian shop and its delicious.

I try and buy it on the day I plan to use it but the bunches are pretty big aren't they? I then wash and chop up the remainder and freeze it in little plastic boxes or ice-cube trays.

Sometimes I buy Coriander plants from Lidl (about 70pish) to have & use on kitchen window sill. I find you really have to keep the plastic wrapper on otherwise they flop over and spoil.

Unfortunately the Asda plants are just too small and expensive - I use a whole one in just one salad!! The bunches I buy are about 4-5 times the size and I can get 2 for £1 :money:- hence needing to know how best to keep them fresh.

Have you tried in an airtight jar in the fridge? I read this is good, but not tried myself. My book said should keep herbs a couple of weeks.

Hi - Bit of a crossover from the greenfinger board, but I have the same problem. I am growing some from seed, very easy and for less than the price of a bunch I hope we are self sufficent for the spring/summer.

Do you add water to them - ie. are they essentially ice cubes with coriander in them? That would be great for curries, etc, but I do use most of it as a leaf - in salads, wraps, garnishes, etc. I know, I know - I've got a bit of a coriander addiction going on:rotfl:!!

I normally put mine in a little bit of water in the fridge door, if I want to use it as a leaf. I find it lasts me a good few days if I do that. I store parsley like this too.

Have you tried the "stay fresh" bags, they had them on sale in homebargains halifax, for 29p. I used them for brocolli, which usually only stays green for 2 days, but in the bags in the fridge it lasted much longer, maybe it would work for corinader.

Brilliant idea! Hadn't thought of them - Thanks :D.

I've been putting mine into a lidded tupperware type pot in the fridge and it seems to work!
