Anybody know anything about 'coconuts'?

My husband brought me a present, a coconut :rotfl: I have no idea what to do with it. Aside from the question of why he brought me a coconut, I have other pressing issues, like 'how do I get into it' etc.....
I have, at this point, tried to get a screwdriver through the top to get out what I presume is coconut milk. I failed. When I shake it, I hear something splashing around, but cannot get it out.
I have since then wrapped it in a tea towel and tried smashing it to death, to no avail. It won't break :rolleyes: I have a ladies hammer, but am I to try that? or will I ruin it?
Can anyone help me? How do it get into it to get at the coconut and the milk and when I do, what can I do with it.
My OH was so pleased when he gave me the gift, I want to do something nice with it for him.

I have battled with a coconut too. You need to hammer it in the centre while holding it in your hand, if you put it on a hard surface it won't break.
BUT - before you do that, punch or screw through a hole at one end and then a couple at the other - where the little round brown bits are. Be careful not to let the milk escape and drain it into a glass. This is delicious on it's own or with alcohol.
Then crack open the shell and break into smaller bits. You can eat thw white flesh directly off them. You can scrape it off and use it for cooking etc. but that's all a bit of a faff.
Unusual gift - maybe repay him with a pineapple? :rotfl:0 -

Good luck with it. I've always found that while the milk (which is clear by the way) is lovely and the flesh is nice, it's never quite worth all the energy that goes into getting at it. hope you find that it is.
If you think he's becoming unwell now I hate to think how he will be if you can't get into the cocunut - try to resist the temptation to throw it, it would probably hurt! :rolleyes:0 -

The good news is I have gotten into the coconut. Who would have thought a coconut could keep me so amused for over 2 hours. Geez...but they make a mess when you try to get into them. I have coconut fur all over the place. Feels like horses hair LOL :rotfl:
I used the corkscrew (fandangled contraption for getting into wine bottles) and made 2 holes I then poured out some clear looking liquid into a glass (all going well at this stage 
) and took a tentative sip...not bad, not bad!
But what can I make with it? Any ideas? Hubby suggested I make a curry or something, he said you can use coconut with that, so he has heard. Can you? Do I just throw it in with chicken fillets diced, curry mix etc. and hope for the best?
I then smashed the coconut to bits :T :T :T Wrapped in teatowel again and hit it to death. I gotta say, it broke into lots of pieces and I DO NOT like the mess - it's unreal! but wow...it tastes gorgeous, though I was worried I was gonna lose a tooth as I tried to prize it from the hard shell bits.
Conclusion? I hope he doesn't buy me another coconut!

Wait! Don't waste it. I live part of the year in Thailand and the coconut is king.
Grate up all the white flesh from inside. If you've got a food processer even easier. Put the bits in and pulp it. Bung it all in a bowl and cover with hot water. Forget about it for a few hours or overnight in the fridge even better. Use a fine mesh strainer and strain into a jug. Squeeze all the moisture you van out of the pulp. Use your hands is easiest. Scrape and creamy goo off the bottom of your seive and mix into what's in the jug,
You now have 'fresh' coconut cream. We never get this in UK so it's areal treat.
Use it to make a delicate curry with chicken or prawns , some butternut squash if you have it or sweet potatoe. Chilli as hot as you like and a squeeze of lime juice and ginger with some chopped garlic. A splash of Fish sauce or soya sauce if you don't have that. Just bung it all in a pan and bring to the boik or simmer gently until chicken is cooked through. salt to taste. Serve with rice.
