Recipe for Cinnamon Buns anyone?

Options
Hi, I wonder if you old stylers will be able to help with this?

I'm reading a book set in the fifties on a canadian airbase and in it the mum keeps baking cinnamon buns, which makes me think mmmm how lovely, bet they are really lovely,

I'm pregnant at the moment so its quickly turning from how lovely wouldn't mind a go at them myself into I NEED to make them now!!!

I have searched on the net and found a couple of recipes but they are all in american sizes if you know what i mean and I'm not the best at converting recipes successfully. A lot of them also use Pecan nuts which I'd rather avoid.

Has anyone a tried and tested recipe for Cinnamon Buns, I (and my family) will be eternally grateful!

  • I've never tried this recipe (I keep meaning to) and it is American (sorry ...) but the pictures alone are enough to satisfy me lol! I'm assuming here that cinnamon buns are what American usually call cinnamon rolls, sorry if I'm missing the mark :)

  • Gingernutmeg, thanks, yes i am assuming that cinnamon rolls are cinnamon buns which is a shame really as I had an idea in my head that because they were called buns they would be like we would think of 'buns' However they still sound luscious!

Rikki thanks for conversions, i always get confused by cups!

  • I use the Iced bun dough, recipe from the link on page one of the Grocery challenge. Then roll it out, spread with soft butter, sugar it and sprinkle with cinnamon and roll up and slice like in the previous post. Put on a baking tray and cover for about 40 minutes before putting in oven at gas 5 for about 15 minutes. Then drizzle with water icing, or leave plain. These are absolutely lovely, and not as much effort as the other recipe.

Alternatively, for an even easier cinnamon bun, I just add a good dose of cinnamon (about a teaspoon) to the flour in the iced bun dough and bake as finger or round shapes. These are not as sweet as the others so they normally have icing on, or glazed with sugar water before baking. I feel the need to bake some now, but will leave it until morning.

    Zzzz

These sound fabulous!! Thanks for the link.

Tesco sell really cheap little cup measures which I find invaluable for American recipes.

  • i find this webaite useful - everything I have made off there comes out really nice! this reciepe says to use a mixer but it can just as easily be done by hand, hope this helps! :)

  • I can recommend the cinnamon and cardamom buns from a Tessa Kiros recipe in Falling Cloudberries (one of my favourite cookbooks) :
    http://whowantsseconds.typepad.com/who_wants_seconds/2005/01/cinnamon_cardam.html

If you don't like cardamom I guess you could leave it out (I love it, but am too lazy to bake these now since I found a great Swedish bakery near me in Edinburgh (Peter's Yard) which sells them. :D

By the way, a lot of Falling Cloudberries is online at Google books if anyone wants to browse through the recipes. I got mine some time ago from thebookpeople for £5, not sure if they still have it.
