  • Hi everyone!

Re second hand tables and chair, well I inherited mine from my inlaws about 15 yrs ago and the table is still going strong and the patina on the top is just fabulous.

I am slinking in and out of here today cos we had take away pizza last night and I am feeling really guilty over how much it cost!!

Re babies: My sister hardly bought anything new for her baby - she haunted second hand shops and charity shops and free cycle of course and some of the items she got were as good as new. No one needs to spend 100's on a pram these days unless they want to!!

Hugs to the Weezls and everyone else who wants one

  • Sorry forgot to say - I am ripening tomatoes on the window sill too, and it works, plus I made some of my Green tomato chutney as I had so many.. Thought I would post it just in case it was useful..

    Divas' Green Tomato chutney
This is my tried and tested (and favourite) recipe.

    1 pint vinegar
    1lb demerara sugar
    1 lb. chopped green tomatoes
    1 lb. chopped cooking apples
    ½ lb. chopped sultanas
    ¼ lb. chopped onions
½ lb. sugar (granulated is fine)
    ½ tsp ground ginger
    Pinch of salt
1 chilli finely chopped (You can skip this if you want a more traditional recipe)
    • Put the vinegar and demerara sugar in a pan and heat gently until sugar melts.
    • Add all the other ingredients
    • Bring mixture to boil and cook slowly stirring all the time until it thickens.
It's ready when you can pull a wooden spoon across the bottom of the pan and the line you make stays clean.

  • hiya red squirrel,
Have you thought about getting a bike, maybe off freecycle or cheaply from the classified ads. With panniers on the back for heavy goods and a back pack for lighter bulky items you will be amazed how much you can carry. Used to go camping on mine so know you can carry lots. Or like me now, there are funky shopping trolleys to buy which also take loads. Wheeling it is much better than carrying it all Hth.

First off sorry for my naughty post, must remember to think before I type (yeah right).

Just dropped a dvd back at blockbuster (I got a voucher thing for a book of 15 free rental voucher for £10 so we've been on a movie renting splurge...we love movies) and as its right next to morrisons I thought I'd have a looksee (don't usually go in) and they have a Dr Pepper substitute...okay, I'm prolly the only one who's gonna get excited by this (I'm a slave to the caffine) but I had to tell someone, and you guys drew the short straw.

Interesting info on pregnancy eating (and funny story, though suprising its quite common for veggis to get meat cravings during pregnancy) and I have to agree with ISOM, if your hungry weezl, you must eat, thats what the bat signals there for!!!!

I luuuuurve what the family (and my friends) affectionately call my "old biddy" trolley. I have back problems which mean I can't carry much even from our local shops -- 2.5kg of spuds or 4pt of milk I can cope with, but not both at the same time -- so a few months back I bought a trolley from Argos. It's fab, and I also take it for a walk to our closest Tesco (3 mile round trip) or on the bus to the next closest which is much bigger (and due to be extended  )

cw18 ..... I want one of those trolleys (I'm 33 !) but my kids and DH say they will disown me if I get one !!

I've told them they ought to try lugging 4 bags or more of shopping 2 miles back to the house (nothing compared to some, I know!)

They have a really funky one in my local 'hardware' shop too ! Might have to go and buy it one day when they're not looking lol :p:D

  • Hi all thanks for the ideas on belly pork...will definately be using them!!!

really bad day today, I had this great idea that I was going to have my meal plans, and i gave myself a budget of £25 a week for all groceries, and I spent near on £50 and didnt even get the lentils. I'm so angry with myself. Do you think I can get lentils from a farm shop...I havent got a clue, couldnt get them from Tesco because all the stuff kept saying they didnt even know they sold dry lentils, and we couldn't find them...dagnammit. Hope all are doing better than me :-)
    :p I'm a frugal wannabe :p

Here's the recipe for those of you that asked (it's from a book called The Farmer's Wife Cookbook, published in 1973 ! :D - some rather yummy stuff in there too !)

I have adapted it but have also done it with other bits and bobs that I will list at the end:

    1lb of cooking apples
    12oz self raising flour
6oz butter (I used marg, works just as well)
    6oz soft brown sugar
    1 tsp ground cinnamon
2-3 tbsp milk (may not need, depending on how juicy your apples are!)

    Method

Peel, core and chop apples and cook in a little water on hob to give about 1/2 pt apple puree (I left mine a little bit chunky, didn't let it go as far as a puree).

Meanwhile, in a bowl sieve the flour and rub in the butter until fine breadcrumbs.

Add sugar and cinnamon (I did add a bit more than the tsp as you couldn't really taste it and I like cinnamon !)

Then add the apple puree and milk (if a bit too stodgy) and mix.

Spoon into a 2lb loaf tin.

Bake in centre of a pre-heated cool oven for about 1 1/4 hours (300F, 150C, GM2). Check with a skewer to ensure mix is thoroughly cooked. Turn out onto wire rack and cool.

I have done some variations with mixed chopped nuts, dates and apricots (as well as the apple puree) but much prefer just the apple.

Freezes well too although is a little more stodgy once defrosted (but I like it that way !)

    Enjoy !

Edit: Not sure how much it would work out per loaf but if you managed to get your apples for free then I think it's a pretty cheap loaf to make ! (Depends how thick you cut the slices too - it doesn't last a day in our house ! lol)
