The Grand Départ of the Tour de France, the world's largest annual sporting event, will be hosted by London for the first time during the weekend of 6 to 8 July 2007.
The race is free to watch and is a great opportunity to showcase London to the rest of the world, bringing more visitors and investment and encouraging more people to take to their bikes.
Cycling facilities across London are improving all the time with investment by the Mayor and Transport for London rising from £5.5million in 2000 to £36 million in 2007/08. It's no surprise then that cycling on the London's major roads has risen by 83 per cent since 2000 with an estimated 480,000 cycle journeys a day. And by 2025, the Mayor of London wants to see a 400 per cent increase in the number of people cycling compared with 2000.
London is a great place to cycle - whether it's in the centre of the city or in the leafy suburbs, it's quick, cheap, healthy and an environmentally friendly way to get around. There are lots of new cycle routes and to help you find your way around, Transport for London produce cycle guides covering the whole of London available free at https://www.tfl.gov.uk/cycles
If you don't have a bike, why not enter our competition to win a 21 gear Ridgeback Motion 2007 bike that's great for both leisure and commuting, together with a Trek Incite 9i bike computer so you can track your speed, distance, time and temperature.
