Be Bright and Be Seen

National Road Safety Week takes place this month and this year it’s all about the safety of children walking and cycling.

The awful truth is that road deaths among children under the age of 16 in Britain have increased by a startling 20 per cent since 2005. In the UK in 2006, 169 children were killed while walking or cycling. That’s 71 pedestrians and 31 cyclists (1). Another 2,426 children were seriously injured on foot and bike (2). Serious injuries include brain damage, paralysis, loss of a limb, burns and severe cuts.

We all need to make sure our children ‘be bright and be seen’. We need to help them learn the right road rules and be aware of the dangers so that they can try and avoid running into trouble.

If it prevents the death of even one child then it is all worthwhile.

As we move into the winter months, the darker evenings mean children are less visible when walking by the road, especially after school. Even if they are accompanied by a parent or carer, the dusky light makes it hard for drivers to spot them.

Walking or cycling to school is great for children and not only for the exercise! It develops basic life skills – not just road safety. It lets them feel part of the community, learning how to meet people, how to manage their time, empowering them with decisions such as what to wear, which route to take and where to cross the road.

But we have to make sure that they are as safe as possible. High-visibility vests, reflective stretchbands and snapbands are essential at this time of year and can all help make your child more clearly visible so that they can be seen.

3M has produced a selection of high visibility clothing and accessories for children to wear and you can find out more about the products and road safety by clicking here.
