Slow decline in Morrisons M Savers?

Options
I try buy as much value stuff as I can buy variety of things in Tesco, Asda and Morrison's. I post regularly on 'Smartprice/value threads' on things tried etc. I've said numerous times on some things Tesco Value is just so much better than Asda SP now.

I buy a lot of Morrisons value range too however in recent weeks some worrying/poorer changes have happened to some of their products.

Their M savers mince was all beef. 500g for £1.82 (approx) Past couple of weeks that has changed to the cack 60/40% split beef/pork mince and still same price. Tried Asda SP mixed mince it was awful. So for Morry's Disappointing.

Also Their M Savers showergel and handwash has went down hill. different/darker green colour and both smell different/worse than before. Hand wash especially was light green and citrus smelling.. it's now dark and not good.

Ok so that's only 3 examples but It could be a slippery slop.

I got into the food downgrading thing a while ago and tried loads of Value stuff from Asda, Morrisons, Tesco & Sainsbury's.

I agree that a fair amount of it is great value (Sain's 27p tea bags for example) but I also found a lot of it to be almost inedible cack.

Well done on staying with it which must help you save a lot of money.

I dumped most of the Value stuff earlier this year when I finally properly started shopping in Aldi.

Their stuff might be slightly more expensive than the Value items in the big supermarkets but it's still generally much cheaper than supermarket own-brand items and I think most of the stuff is as good as own-brand and often even better.

Perhaps you could try to squeeze a tiny bit more out of your budget and try some things from Aldi. Lidl also sell a fair amount of cheap but great stuff.

If the quality of some of the things you're buying is decreasing, I highly recommend a trip to Aldi if you have one nearby and see if they sell an equivalent. It may be cost a bit more than you're used to if you're used to Value prices but I bet you'll find what your getting will be of a much higher quality.

My latest Aldi discovery is the cereals. Recently tried their version of Frosties and Rice Krispies and found they taste identical to the brand - couldn't believe I wasted so much money on Kellogg's over the years when these were available. Both in big (600g or so) boxes for not much more than a quid. Looking forward to trying the others now. Yum!

Their bin liners used to be great. Awful now.
  • I used to buy M Savers Coleslaw but I can't find it anymore, haven't been able to for weeks :( my guess is that it hasn't had the reception they thought it would and they're losing money on it?? Who knows...

I do often use Aldi's/Lidl's Usually a half/half split between Lidl's stuff then other bits and bobs in main supermarket. For me Tesco's value range since it went 'Everyday Value' has a wider and fantastic range! Morrisons was very good. Now questioning that!

in respect to the mince, i though asda SP was awful, full of fat, chewy and gristley stuff. i did use tesco value, which tasted much better, but has a lot of water in it, i tend to have to drain it. however i have started buying Aldi mince, 750g for £2.69? i think . it is much nicer, british beef, no water swimming at the bottom of the pan, no chewy, gristly stuff.
if you are close to an aldi give it a try, i fully recommend it :)

Off topic but I thought Morrison's users might look at this thread:

I went into a Morrison's this morning as I needed potatoes. It's not a shop I use regularly but was working nearby. What I found was that I had to do the most amazing mental maths to work out which were best value for money. I think it was only the loose ones that had the price per kg all the others just had the price and weight on the bags.

Did I miss the signs? Is it usual not to put the price per kg? Is it legal?

Morrisons do have the price per Kg on the packs, It's right there with the variety and best before date.
