Just vot a letter from dwp claiming I owe the social fund from 1993!!! I have no recollection of this, woman on phone said I will alays owe this even though they had no proof except what the computer said, nor any answer to why they had waited 20 years.......she said they'd written before but I don't remember seeing anything...she then said they can now take it out of my salary but for a 20 year old alleged debt of £116? This doesn't seem right.....she did let slip they couldn't enforce it before the earning ngs comment......0

If you owe it you should pay it, if not send a prove it letter! They will have to have proof that you borrowed the money to enforce it at all if its from 1993 and even then its statute barred except as outlined from fat and fermi above, i believe.yes i have 6 kids by two different fathers, but Im the parent that is there for them ALWAYS!! :A0

That's just it...20 years? I can't remember that far back but I know I haven't claimed benefits since 1991.....0

I have posted this before.
According to CAB:
DWP guidance for decision makers states that recovery of a debt should be abandoned and the balance written off where the debt is:-
•under £25; or
•under £100 and at least six years have elapsed since the last repayment or deduction took place; or
•under £300 and at least ten years have elapsed since the last repayment or deduction took place; or
•over £300 and at least 20 years have elapsed since the last repayment or recovery took place.0 -

Yes, you can send the statute barred letter.

You could perhaps add to that something like...Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB
