  • The best tip I can give is allow plenty of time to organise it and be considerate of all of the people that you want to attend and how much they might be able to afford. I organised mine a year in advance. It cost £100 for 4 nights away at a resort in the uk, food and some booze we took with us from the supermarket, a spa evening and a bowling evening on the resort. We took our own bikes and swimming and walking were free. Other activities were optional and we all agreed to go out for a meal on our last night. There were 7 of us and the week was semi planned with activities such as a cooking evening, cream tea and dress up and a bbq. As we had so long to save up people made payments in instalments. We all had a great time and it was good value for money. I compare this to the last hen do I went on where the maid of honour was more focused on the wow factor and one night away cost over £200! The organisation was all done last minute and she had no regard for those of us who are less fortunate. In the end I had to refuse to pay for the hen aswell as myself as this would have been well outside my budget! Needless to say whilst the hen enjoyed herself I'm not sure the rest of us did.

My sons been invited to a stag do but its in Amsterdam for 3 days. I feel its selfish as their friends want to be loyal, but none of them can realistically afford to go. Why not stay local, it doesnt take going abroad to have some fun!

I had my hen do last year and I was really specific about people not spending loads of money on it. I found a brilliant place in Dedham, Essex where they hire row boats so 15 of us set off rowing up and down the river for an hour or so and then had the most gorgeous afternoon tea with champagne in the sunshine at the restaurant on the riverside. Cost was £10 a head for food and drink (others paid more if they wanted to drink more). My friends all got together to create a 'memory and wishes' box for me which included old piccies, beautiful cards and a little written piece from everyone about their favourite memories of them and I as well as their hopes for my future. I was in tears over it!
Such a perfect low key hen do that was cheap and fun. I wouldn't of had it any other way. :)

If you want to do an activity don't go through a stag/hen party agency. I've been contracted by an agency to provide an activity and I was amazed by the mark up they added. The party would have saved a good amount of money if they'd come to me directly. Spend a bit of time on Google looking for an activity provider in the area you want - believe me, that's all the agency are doing.
  • I'm organising a hen night at the moment. The bride to be wanted a cheap hen weekend in an easily accessible location (all the hens live in Ireland). We picked Galway City in July which can be very expensive.

However, I found some apartments 10 minutes walk from the centre - normally student apartments but rented to holidaymakers during the summer months. It works out as €60 for two nights per person. We also gave people the option to stay both nights or just one.

Apartments mean that we can have a night in on the Friday night. The plan is to organise a kitty and ask everyone to bring a bottle along. We'll have cocktails, music and games to get everyone talking. This means that people who are travelling straight from work don't have to get there for a certain time. It also means that we can all get ready together, make and have breakfast together, which we couldn't have done if we had rented hotel rooms.

I've also been researching activities for the Saturday day - they are all different prices, so I plan to send a selection to the hens and ask them to vote on their favourite. On the Saturday night I've found a good restaurant that does a cheap fixed-price menu.
  • Just a bit of helpful information if anyone is in the Essex area. My friends organised my Hen Night at La Quinta Restaurant, Benfleet, Essex. Take That Tribute, 3 course meal and disco. It was fantastic!! The food, service, atmosphere was first class. Certainly worth a try, even if you are a little further afield and could get transport. Some local Premier Inn's too if you need a bed for the night. Give it a go, you won't be disappointed.
  • Me and my girls are off to london, might sound expensive but here's how we got it cheap!
We booked a travelodge at £80 per room which sleeps 3, there are 15 of us going. I used moneysavingexpert.com to find offers on trains and checked every website til i found the cheapest. East coast came up cheapest at £16.50 each return from newark northgate to kings cross! Bargain!! My girls all gave me £50 each which paid for the hotel and train and has left us about £60 to buy wine, sandwiches and scones to have our own little afternoon tea on the train! On the saturday night we are going out for a nice meal (toptable.co.uk/.com has all the london restaurants and show u what u can afford with ur budget and lets you book ur table online). Then we are going to have a relaxed drink in a few bars, if we fancy visiting a club then we will but we are going to take the night as it comes.
On the sunday we are going to hire barclays bikes £1 each for 24hrs and cycle round somewhere like hyde park just for fun and the find an m&s food to buy food and champagne for a picnic, weather permitting.
To travel around the city a day pass on the tube is around £7 each! Oh and my girls have all got a little challenge to fulfil at some point over the weekend, e.g convince someone u r a celeb! Bag a freebie in harrods ;)
And this is all 2 days before the olympics starts so definitely a bargain. If u book far enough in advance u can get a hotel for £20-£30 (premier inn/travelodge) and book ur train as soon as advance fares are available online (12 weeks in advance) or if ur booking last minute megabus.com has cheap train fares.Xx
  • I got married in September of 2007 and organised my Stag Weekend in the April of 2007 as I had very definite ideas of what I wanted to do.

    12 of us involved for the full weekend;
Flight from East Midlands Airport to Valencia, Spain £80.00 each
3 nights in the Ibis Valencia Palacio De Congresos £15.00 per night each so £45.00 each for the weekend

TOTAL - £125.00 for 3 nights in Valencia

I also wanted to see CF Valencia play and the game was a 2200 Saturday night kick off, we were tempted to pre-order our tickets but most Agencies were asking £100.00  or more. We arrived at the Mestella mid-afternoon as soon as the ticket office opened and bought all our tickets in one large block, result 25euros a ticket  .

Beer was relatively cheap at the time and food was excellent all over town. Bear in mind this was at the time that the Americas Cup was being held in Valencia and the Marina / Harbour area had just been redeveloped so plenty going on all over the place.

Many friends have commented that this was one of the best Stag Weekends they had participated in.

nb - no silly dresing up or forfeits were involved :)

I've organised a couple of hens over the past 2 years and it;s really hard to trying to find stuff to do that's fun and something out of the ordinary, but with a low budget that encourages as many people to come as possible! And I've also been on the receiving end of horrendously expensive ones which you feel you've no choice but to attend and spend!

Ramall89 your hen sounds like an ace weekend but can I offer a couple of tips as a londoner?

just a word of warning on the boris bikes - yes the 24 hour rental is £1 but if you use a bike for more than 1/2 hour at a time you have to pay extra. Most journeys can be done inside 1/2 hour so it shouldn't be a problem but just be aware! We always have great fun picking up a bike, going somewhere, dumping it at a stand, having a coffee/wander/lunch/shop, picking up another one from somewhere else: and repeat!

When you're in Hyde Park, I totally recommend cycling to the kensington end and going into the Whole Foods food shop - ok it's a bit more expensive than M&S but the choice is ammmmazing and visually its fantastic! you can spend a good hour in there wandering round, getting free tastings loads of things...

If there is an 'attraction' you want to see, loads do 241 deals with a valid train ticket, so check those out. loads of galleries and museums are free.

other than relying solely on toptable, I can recommend lots of cheap but excellent places depending on whether there's a particular cuisine you had in mind

I got married last month and for a stag do we had a simple cheap night!

My new inlaws have a static caravan in Dorset a bit over an hour away - we went there and had a barbeque on the wooden deck with lots of cider. Simple night off, a few drinks and best of all no huge bill or embarassing stories to keep quiet.

Meanwhile my new wife went to a local restaurant with friends - it was a BYO (bring your own) so all booze purchased on supermarket deals and came out about £15 a head.

End of the day - do you really need a night in an overpriced bar/club at the other end of the country to celebrate the fact you're getting married? Time to get down to earth on stag/hen do's I think;)
