How long does a default show on your credit file for? Is it six years from the default date (as stated on experian t&c's pdf) or six years from the date of settlement (as just advised to me by one of their staff) Somebody please clarify!

Six years from the date the account was settled, or defaulted , whichever happened first.
So if you have a default and then a later settlement, it's 6 years from the initial default.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Hey. thanks for the reply. So in essence, there is no point in making a payment or you will penalise yourself for longer. What a crazy mixed up world we live in...0

You mean no point paying a debt thats got a default? You don't penalise yourself for longer.
Once you have a default then regardless of what you do (pay, don't pay, partially pay) then default still goes 6years after the default.
(Of course another reason for paying a defaulted debt is to stop the chance of court action and a CCJ being put on your file)A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
