Fruit that is also going a bit iffy can be dehydrated to eat as it is or added to yoghurts or even powdered to sweeten home made. you can make lovely sweeties from the powdered fruit mixed with yoghurt and dried in dollops on a piece of plastic cut to shape if the dehydrator does not have a rollup tray. I used a place mat from l*dls and cut it to fit using the plain side as the right side.
Nasty bits can be cut off veg and the good bits dried for soups.

Oh I'm so sorry it is infected :( (I was so hoping it wasn't the case)but how wonderful that the dentist is making it a priority next week and not drawing out your suffering. Very best wishes for next week and I hope the antibiotics bring some relief in the meantime as they attack the infections.

Thank you, its definitely a relief that he will fit me in next week so no more waiting, its just the building up - I really am phobic, and he doesnt do equinox either (which someone suggested yesterday), but its got to be done, I cannot carry on like this.

Not much OS happening here, am not able to drive or do much so kids are all cooped up (OH is at work) and I am just getting the eldest two to do bits and making do for meals. My parents have done a little shopping for me but its always so expensive when they do it costs more for a few bts than I pay for a full week so I am trying to be very careful and do without stuff rather than ask.

may well do an internet shop later if I can find a free delivery code or discount just to see us through.

For chicken breasts I often will whizz some butter, herbs and garlic together, and open up the breast smear the mix inside then wrap with bacon and oven cook. Its very tender and not at all dry and goes well with anything.

    Hi all

Have just got to page 7 but can't wait to ask my question about using an old fridge for storing apples. Am I right in assuming that the apples stop the fridge from smelling?(normally fridges smell vile if you turn them off and shut the door) Or do you not switch it off at all? Sorry, sounds like a numpty question now I've re-read it:o

I just checked on my tomato plants, and now have a few petit pois size tomatoes! Thanks for all the advice from everyone. (But kittie - did you really mean spray them with Bordeaux as in red wine?!)

judy_ glad to hear you got the job.

*zippy* - glad to hear Julian Graves will continue - hoping we WI members continue to get our 10% off!

shegar - the blackbirds have been busy here too, stripping my blueberry bush. This started last year, and I've lost them both years, even though I've netted them - the little wotsits manage to get underneath! In previous years I've had blueberry yoghurt, blueberry muffins etc, but now only manage to find the odd ripe one to nibble!

I have about four tiny green tomatoes today:j:j:j and have just reserved a few solar showers for £1 each from B&Q, I seem to remember kittie recommending them as a way of warming water for dishwashing etc so when I saw they were so cheap decided to have a go. :)

:rotfl: No she didn't mean that, she means this: http://www.thompson-morgan.com/garden-supplies/pest-and-disease-control/vitax-bordeaux-mixture/kww2584TM

But a glass of wine in hand helps pass the time doing it;)

GreyQueen - here is the recipe you requested ...:D

    Impossible Quiche
    1½ cups grated cheese
    ½ cup SR flour
    1 onion, finely chopped
    1½ cups milk
    4 eggs
    Salt & pepper
Optional extras:- 3 rashers bacon (chopped); mushrooms; spinach; garlic; parsley; or anything else you have lurking in the fridge.

Mix together all the ingredients - but DO NOT BEAT.
Pour into a greased dish (I use my Pyrex casserole)
Bake at Gas 4, 180° C until set and a knife comes out clean - approx 45 mins to 1 hour - depends on depth of dish.

  • Nice new thread - thank you. It will be much quicker to catch up with (for a while anyway!)

I had an unexpected find tonight at the back of the freezer - some home made lemon ice cream. I have some lemon and poppy seed Costco muffins in the freezer so I think tomorrow night I'll be heating one of them and serving up with the ice cream. I'm starting to work my way through the freezer contents as I want to defrost them both soon. Hubby always says it makes for very interesting meals when I'm using things up:D

I've also taken a notion to make gingerbread. I haven't had any for ages so I'll make some later in the week. I might ice it for a change too.

I now have a total of 10 tomatoes on my 3 plants - hardly enough to start a greengrocers but it's progress and not bad considering they are outside.

I'm thinking of planting a plum tree for next year as one of my friends said they produce lots of fruit. I'm not sure if they tend to produce in their first full year though - will have to do some research.

I'm also planning to venture into my loft later in the week. I've been merrily putting things up there for the last 14 years or so and I feel I really should go and see what's up there. I figure if I rotated some vases, paintings etc I could give a few rooms a new look without it costing a penny. I also need to check if the ceiling is going to come down anytime soon due to my "collection" up there!

I have a bit of a dilemma - my late grandmother gave me her Singer treadle sewing machine about 12 years ago. She gave it to me rather than anyone else as I used to sew a lot and she considered that I took good care of things. It's in full working order, the wood could do with a bit of restoration but it still looks great. It's been on display since the day I got it however it doesn't really fit in with the style of my house. I can't bring myself to get rid of it though. I checked the serial number and found it is listed as 1891:eek: which would be about right. Granny got it as a wedding present in 1939 and said it had been a wedding gift to her mother in law in 1914 and wasn't new then. My mum (her daughter) thinks I should advertise it for sale but I feel so disloyal so at the moment it's heading for the garage with a cover to protect it. I'm not overly sentimental normally but I can't bring myself to let this go for some reason. Silly, I know:o

Off to catch up on the rest of the thread now:)
