Tax re-claim trainee teacher - 'taxable income'?

Hello,

Hopefully somebody can help.

I am a trainee teacher and was wondering/hoping I can put in a reclaim for tax for the 10/11 tax year.

From April-August 2010 I worked full time.

From September onwards I have been attending university/work placements etc so am classed as an 'unemployed student' I think.

I have had money to paid to me for completing the training, but I don't think this is classed at 'taxable income'?

Any help would be great! :)

If your total income is over the personal allowance for 2010/11 (£ 6475) then the proportion of income over £ 6475 will be taxable.

Strictly speaking, the incentive payment should have gone through the payroll too.

You will need a P60 from your employer if you need to make a claim to the Revenue

Thanks. Do you think the bursary/loan etc is classed as 'taxable income' then? I'm not sure how it is all classed. The previous job would probably be close to the threshold so depending on how they view what I have received for my teaching course I could receive all the PAYE paid on my previous job?

You'll need to be more specific re the bursary / loan .... in order to deduce whether it's taxable income. Your own application / T&Cs should tell you?

You only get a P60 if you're with an employer at 5th April .... so you will need the P45 for any reclaim. If your earnings are less than £6475 and it is a non-taxable bursary (most are - see below) then all the PAYE paid during 10-11 should be reclaimable.

As above - your own papers should clarify the tax status of the 'bursary / loan' ........... bit more detail here :

Thanks Mike, that's fantastic. I'll check all the paperwork tonight.

I'm not sure on the P45 so may have to get in contact with previous employer on that one.
