Regain credit history

Hi All

I was declared bankrupt in 2004, crikey that seems so long ago now..

I was discharged after 8 months, and paid a hefty amount back over a period of 2 years.

Now after 7 years ahead i still cant get any credit, i cant even get a debit card, nor an overdraft (not even £10).

I was wondering if anyone could kindly point me in the right direction of regaining credit again...not that i need it,as i am now fab at saving, very tight with my money and hold down 3 jobs..Why do i need credit i hear you ask, well i dont, its just the satisfaction knowing im clear!
:T:j
It would just be soooo nice not to be refused after all this time..

Help?

i look forward to hearing from you

  • Have you pulled your credit files ? If not, do that. There should be nothing on your files about your history as it is all over 6 years old. However, if banks have your name on a list of people who were once BR then they know that forever.

If you have a bank account, have your salaries paid into that and manage bills from direct debits from that account then I don't see why you shouldn't get a debit and probably a credit card from that bank.
  • Thanks for that, I have just signed up with Experian for the free trial. I will cancel my DD when i have read what it says.

I have made sure every bill is paid and has been for the last 6 years, I have been squeaky clean all this time now, so i cant see what the problem is, unless its like you say the bank have me on a list.
I have definately gone by the book, so its slightly annoying im still punished for something that happened all that time ago!

    Thakns for the advise. x

It's wise to obtain your credit file from all 3 of the main companies: Experian, Equifax and Callcredit.

You can get a paper copy for just £2 from each of them, send a cheque/PO to their address enclosing your name, DOB and address(es) for the last 5 years.

  • As said get your credit files and check they are fine, if not do the clean up

You should be able to get a debit card. The Co-op Cashminder and Barclays Cash Card accounts both come with them and they are accounts that BR can obtain so maybe try those.

The Other thing is if you have been trying willy nilly after the last few months to get accounts etc. then the searches are on your credit files and that will put creditors off and refuse you so give it a rest for a couple of months and then try again.

Apply for a Cash Plus Gold Pre Paid credit Card on the credit builder option. http://www.mycashplus.co.uk/cashplus-extras/creditbuilder/default.aspx You will probably be able to do this straight away.

Apply for a catalogue account. Very or Next seem to accept people. Buy a few things and pay off in full each month.

Once your file is cleaned up see if you can get a high interest CC like Capitol One or Vanquis. Use it for something like your petrol each month and then pay it off on pay day, that way you incur no interest and you get your green ticks.

Try and get a cheap mobile phone deal once your file is cleaned up to.

If you have a bank account an d bills on DD's you should also be getting those green ticks.

But remember spread it out and don't be applying for all and sundry.

Also don't forget if you have no credit then that puts off creditors as well. Catch 22.
