My plan for the business was done well, as my friend is a chartered accountant and helped me loads. But nothing was planned for when I got no customers. Did not plan the council would take away my free car parking from the area, everyone here is struggling.
I'm not sure what you mean by customers find it hard to pay out on something, when they think very little effort is involved???? complimentary therapy is amazing, I cure or help everyone I see.
I think what with the recession lots of people have not got the extra cash to spend.
Really don't want to do bankruptcy or have my house taken away , after reading stories on here, it sounds soul destroying
Sorry to be blunt but it sounds like you are expecting clients turn up as if by magic? Marketing and organising your business is a crucial and huge part of building demand for the services that you spent those 6 years studying, how many years did you study to learn those business skills?
I'm in the same business and spend a huge amount of time on trying to get myself known, on building a big enough client base for the referrals I need to build my reputation. I'm trying to do this on a shoestring too. I'm continually trying to network and spread the word and find new ways of attracting new clients, as well as reminding myself that the reason I don't have lots of repeat business is that it works - it's a challenge.
I had to go BR earlier this year for reasons including lack of clients/income and I can assure you it's far from soul destroying, it's giving me a truly fresh start to grow my business and freed me from the constant debilitating worry of not being able to pay my debts, and allowing me to focus on where I need to be to best help my clients. I know I need 4 or 5 years before I will have a sustaining business and statistically if I can get through the first 3 years there's a good chance I'll be fine.

how did you work prior to being self employed? Is it an option to go back to doing something like you previous job? May not be what you want but debt is one of those things that make you do things that you would not normally want to and realising its not forever just for now.0

thanks everyone for your answers.
to be honest, I've never been so tired in my life, mentally. I work 59 hours a week, networking, making my website seen, leafleting, cold calling, using social networking to gain customers.
I also rent rooms out to other therapists.
but still it seem its not enough......I feel I've totally underestimated how long it would take to build a client base.
I've decided to leave the clinic behind & work from home, get a part time job and still follow my dream of working for myself as a therapist.
I get down about it sometimes, and know this effects my work.
after reading everyones comments & other stories I feel quite confident about the future, and am looking forward to working from home, and being able to manage my debt better.
I've applied for some part time work and am going to talk to my landlord about the lease, as I've still got 2 years to go !! So thats my next hurdle !
again thanks everyone for the comments.0 -
Hi,
Just a few ideas to help you build a client base:-
Indulgence Evenings at schools. It may be a bit late for any now as school breaks up in 6 weeks, but look around for next term (September). We charged £5 for a 15 min treatment, you bring your own flyers etc. All therapists were fully booked. We had relfexology, hot stone, aroma massage, mini manicures, pedicures, facials, NLP, etc.
Also pamper parties are a great way to get more clients - find a friend who will have a morning party - you charge everyone a nominal price & offer a discount on their first full treatment with you.
With regards to the BR, you will be better to contact business line - part of National Debt Line to see where you stand.
Also doing a SOA will help you see where you are spending and what income v's outgoings you have. This site is great, you can post back here & we can help with the allowances for BR. Just click the MSE button & copy & paste into here.
