Big thanks for this GR and it sounds yummy. We are trying to go veggie so this is a great incentive!

The gallette au chou is a French peasants' dish. This recipe contains bacon but it works well without. I used fresh rosemary in it. I liked it but found it quite dense and on the stodgy side. I would probably cook it for longer at a slightly lower heat next time. I also think it needs to be quite well seasoned if you're not using bacon. I don't like salt but felt it needed plenty.

If anyone else has cooked this I'd appreciate some tips as DH loved it and it was a hit with my toddler. Great way to get him to eat his cabbage!

Here are my lunch and dinner plans for the week. For breakfast ideas see my original menu planner. (To add link.)

    Lunches:
Pasta with olive oil, garlic, cherry tomatoes, capers and olives.
    Lentil shepherd’s pie with sprouts
    Cheese and tomato sandwiches
    Beans on toast

For lunch on the go, the pasta in olive oil works well as a cold salad.
The shepherd's pie can be a weekend dish, as can the beans on toast or cheese on toast. I would take cheese sandwiches out with sliced tomato in a seperate container to avoid the sandwiches going soggy.

    Alternatives to original plan:

Tartrex (or other pate) sandwiches with thinly sliced onion
Houmous in pitta bread with grated carrot or sliced black olives
Houmous with sliced pitta bread, sliced carrot, pepper and tomatoes for dipping

I'd take out fruit, yoghurt and a muffin too. I'll post the recipe later today. They're delicious!

I think I might try the original version of this tomorrow as I'll have some leftover belly pork rashers (SORRY to all the veggies on the thread :D ). We have *loads* of savoy cabbage in our veg box and it would be great to get some into DH and the boys without complaints!

I'll let you know how it turns out.

    Great, Spiddy. Thanks.

Poppy, how did the shepherd's pie turn out? I hope you liked it if you made it.

Whatatwit, I'll let you know about the passata later and I'll also measure our dish we cook the shepherd's pie in as I said I would.

Madsmum, I hope you get some ideas. That's the purpose of the thread really. Not that I'm trying to turn people veggie! It's just good to have plenty of veg in your diet!

I'm veggie too and am dead impressed by the variety of what you have. I tend to end up batch cooking and having the same thing to death :)

If you have any suggestions as to either what freezes well or what you can cook in the slowcooker (ideally both :)) I would be forever grateful!!

This is a really useful thread!

Belfastgirl, I'm going to try the curry in the slowcooker. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Whatatwit, the passata I have at the moment is a valfrutta one and is 560ml. DH did the shopping but I usually buy the bettabuy one for curries and chillies and an organic one for Italian stuff. They are all roughly the same size I think.

Gingham what lovely meal ideas! We're all meat-eaters here, but do enjoy vegetarian meals too. I love veggie bakes etc and can always just serve the hulking sons and DH meat (chops or whatever alongside the meal) I really fancy the gallette au chou and will do it with the bacon bits. Not clear about the "pastry". Do you just line the base and then top with it, or is it up the sides as well, like a normal pie? Hope you can understand my garble:o

Thanks, Churchmouse. The recipe came through with my farmaround stuff yesterday so yesterday was the first time I cooked it. It says it is a smooth dough and I didn't know if that meant it should be 'dough' like, but it came out thick dropping consistency. The dish I used was too large because it didn't say what size to use. However, it just kind of puffed up a little round the cabbage so I don't think it needs to line the sides. (And wouldn't if it turns out as wet as mine did.)

I don't think my first attempt was quite right although, as I said, my husband and son loved it. But it was good enough and different enough for me to want to share it and hopefully between us we'll get it right!

Thanks Gingham! You never know till you mix them up what a collection of ingredients will "feel" like. I'm not cooking tonight (explained in the daily :D ) but I'm bored of doing nothing so I'm going for a mosey round the shops. I'll get the bacon and cabbage and hopefully have a go at this tomorrow. I'll even own up if it goes wrong;)
