Desktop PC - Best deal

Options
Hi

Hope this is in the right place.

My OH's brother is looking for a new PC. He is looking to spend no more than £400. It will be used mostly for homework, and a bit of gaming. He would require a Monitor and Windows included.

Anyone know of any good deals online?
:p

    I would back that up - At the lower end Dell are usually pretty competative - may not offer the best expansion potential but ofr a basic PC for emails/net/basic multimedia they are usually pretty good.

    I would be monitoring hotukdeals.com on a daily basis for dell special offers.

    Remember to use quidco on top.
  • Try dell outlet, much cheaper than the normal site

    NOTE: NO longer available (see my newer post below - her order was cancelled)

    Very good value Aria AXL 3200 Fusion Home for £399.49 [includes free delivery as per the review in Computer-Shopper mag]

    To view the PC click here then on the View button in line with Computer Shopper Feb 2007 review.

    The only drawback is that it won't be good for any games, except Windows own & pre-2000(?) commercial ones, so he'll need to add a better PCI-E one at extra cost.

    The spec:

    * AMD Athlon 64 3200+ AM2 processor
    * MSI K9VGM-V Socket AM2 motherboard
    * Arianet MIDI Tower3 Blk/Sil ATX2.0 case
    * 2x512Mb PC2-5400 Elixir DDR2 SDRAM memory
    * 200GB HDD SATA 2
    * 18X DVDRW optical drive
    * On-Board Graphics
    * OnBoard Sound
    * 19'' TFT Monitor I]widescreen[/I] - see [url=http://www.pcpro.co.uk/shopper/labs/100514/aria-axl-fusion-home-3200.html]Review[/url
    * Microsoft Wireless Optical 1000 keyboard
    * Microsoft Wireless mouse
    * Microsoft XP Home OEM + Vista [i.e., free upgrade to Vista - smallish delivery+handling fee payable]

    My neighbour recently purchased one - looking forward to see how it performs. G
  • Try ebuyer.com and savastore.com and look at the Acer ranges, they change from day to day but the customer reviews are sound as it's mostly IT savvy geezers(m & f) who use them cos of the keen pricing.

    Easy four hundred quid, woudln't buy Dell unless it was a super crazy double memory and free delivery deal.

    Good Luck

    Scrap my previous suggestion for the Aria PC.

    Not only is it no longer available, but yesterday they had the audacity to cancel my neighbour's order made on 16/01/07, citing non-availability of some components. That's ridiculous because all the components (or alternative equivalents) are readily available on their own website - see screenshot (done yesterday). As you can see, purchasing each individually is going to add £80 to the cost (incl delivery).

    I've made a formal complaint & also posted messages at the Computer-Shopper site/forum (that did the 'Best Buy' review). The cancellation wasn't the only cause for complaint.

    On the lookout for another system now. G

    Thanks for that :). One misgiving though: it's probably not very upgradeable - e.g. if one wants to upgrade to a dedicated graphics card. G
