I have seen this computer in use
http://www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/product.do?sku=995600
and would like one of a similar specification. I would prefer a desktop and am not bothered about Vista
Any suggestions?

Check the Dell Dimension E520

Better CPU, larger HD, and includes a 19' monitor. £469 inc. VAT & delivery. In fact, the Comet one looks overpriced."I'm not even supposed to be here today."0 -
How about this one - Im not a techie person but it seems to be quite a good spec. Took the dell spec to PC world and they compared this to it and it worked out cheaper as the dell spec was just over £518 but slight difference in the media card reader - dells was higher spec.

Id go for a Dell over a Packard Bell weaver. The Packard also has an older CPU, and, worst of all, if anything goes wrong, youve got a very low chance of getting it sorted out to any level of satisfaction. PC World customer service has a very poor reputation.
Personally I dont have any hesitation to recommend Dell to novice PC buyers. Their products are well priced, the components that they use are generally up to date, and they dont try to flog off old stock as cutting edge, probably because their huge turnover means that they dont need to do so, unlike some high street 'offers'. Also, from what Ive heard, give or take the odd exception, their customer service is very good, which is worth very little at the point of sale, but becomes priceless in a couple of months when something goes pear shaped."I'm not even supposed to be here today."0 -
Don't know much about emachines. Safer will Dell in my opinion
At a glance Comet doesn't seem good value for money. Graphics card doesn't seem good.
You say you're not bothered about Vista, but PC prices on XP machines will fall at the end of January as everyone shifts the old stock. So either way right now isn't a good time to buy a PC. I would guess you'll save £100 in a month by holding till Feb and shopping around.0 -
i have had a emachines pc for 4 yrs now ,no probs still going strong.0

HP Pavilion t3250 P4 640 1GB 200GB DVD+/-R+/-RW XPH from dabs.com. Was £399.99 now £299.99. Tower only doesn't appear or mention to have Keyboard and mouse. But could, beacuse My last two PC were HP without monitors and did have keyboard, mouse, and one even had speakers. but then again maybe not.
