Hi there, just popped back to give you another recipe which fits well into the new challenge......
costs 37p per portion, 459 cals per serving Would be lovely with some of your homegrown rocket ceridwen!

Drool.... That sounds amazing. I love rocket too, will have to try this out. Last time I was in tesco they had alson reduced the jars of aubergine and courgette in oil to 50p each, would that work too?

afternoon...weezl ya should wite a book ;) Well I'm here to report that I've been cooking up a storm as my old boss would say! Tomato hommus done (and just had some for lunch!) used tinned chick peas (1 can) and very old toms (darent look at eat by date!) and also chucked in some olivey peppers that have been sitting in the fridge..yummy!
Also made shaz ginger cake (cooking as I type) and a made up recipe...being a good(ish) girl am trying to use existing food so gently fried an onion, added 1/2 chopped pack bacon (smoked) and fried until bacon getting just crispy...then added 2 cans tinned toms and 2 cans canelli beans and simmered for 40 mins...if like me that doesent quite do it for a whole meal am going to have it tonight with garlic bread! No idea of costigs but I got 3 main sized meals out of it...but you could prob get 6 reasonable portions...

Thank 'ee our Weezl. Right at the moment - my mixed spicy salad leaves are "winning the race". Might have to have another go with the rocket - but am contemplating suitable uses for said mixed spicy ones.

    ISOM...re Weezl writing a book....think it might help if I gave (another) virtual "nudge"?:D - ooh....sometimes I just like to be naughty...:D

Must get myself together - gardening this morning and repotting my fruit trees - hope they'll be happier in their new "homes" - as my pear tree is having leaf problems (black blotches and curling leaves)..
more gardening this afternoon - only this time its helping to pot plants up to sell for a good cause....

ISOM - BTW - congrats on that debt-clearing. Looking at your signature - I get the impression you're clearing it at a rate of knots at the moment...

Bashful how exciting:T:T:T:T, midwife care sounds great, and good to do what DF is comfortable with! (did you mean your DF or the babies DF?) Although HB's are low risk and theoretically cheaper by loads for the NHS, not many Primiparae (first time mums) attempt them, and of those that do a much higher percentage transfer to hospital, so if you're a little distance away, then I can kind of see the logic. (it's your first time right? I hope I've remembered that properly :o;) Don't listen to bad stories, it's hard work, but well worth it. I never thought, even in the pushing stage, that I couldn't do it again. :) )

You probably feel fine about it all, but do feel free to post/pm anything you feel uncertain about, sometimes it's easier to ask our most honest vulnerable questions online, cos in real life it's a bit embarrassing!:o:o:o

Top tips: arnica, and calcium/magnesium at a high dose daily at the moment to prepare you, then topical arnica, ibuprofen gel and sudocrem and a bag of frozen peas all handy at home ready for applying in phases to your, ahem.... undercarriage....:D

oooH thanks for the tips Weezl! Am doing an online shop next week so will order some arnica etc if they have it. Can never be too prepared.
Been drinking horrible raspberry leaf tea for the last 4 weeks, and am hoping that is going to have some affect or I will not be best pleased!!!!

When I said DF i meant Fiance!!! Now I realise that is not what the abbreviation is for and hope I have not written something previously that might sound extremely wrong if people thought I meant my father!!! LOL!!I dont think I've written anything inappropriate!!! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: must learn the lingo  me thinks!!!!

You do have it right, this is my first time too :eek::eek::eek:! I'm such a worry wart, I'm just more worried about something going horribly wrong, and have even told my (fiance!!) what to do if I die!!!! I'm so morbid and wrong I know :o and I'm a bit worried that I will be alone which is likely so not worth worrying about!!! Fiance works around London, mainly East and is on the move all day, all my family live an hours drive away from me and I dont know anyone at all near where I live!!!!:eek: I've read up on what to do if I have an abnormally quick birth and am on my own!!!! I have it covered!!! But all that is very unlikely so trying not to think about it.:D I do really want to use washable nappies so am going to have to keep practising with them bambino mio nappies!!!! :D

What a waffle!!!! Hope all are ok and all are having a fantastic frugal weekend! :T
    :p I'm a frugal wannabe :p

ISOM we must have some kind of psychic connection because we have independently made almost exactly the same sauce :D

I'm gonna have a go at costing what I have just made so here goes...

Inspired by Weezl's delish sounding pasta sauce I decided to make some too, and some soup to take into work for lunch.

    2 chopped onions- 20p
    Pack of bacon (chopped)- £1.23
bit of garlic- who knows :)

Then I split into 2 pans. Into one I added
    2 tins chopped tomatoes- 70p
    chopped olives-82p
    1/4 pack of lentils- 22p
half jar aubergine in oil- 25p
    half a courgette- 15p
Little bits of chorizo (mmm)- 35p

That is all bubbling away together in a pan, I reckon that will do pasta sauce for 10 meals so thats 32p a portion with some meat in it, would be cheaper without the bacon

    In the other pan is
    Bits of cauliflower- 15p
    Tin kidney beans- 14p
    1/4 pack of lentils- 22p
2 Stock cubes- umm.... no idea, I am going to say 10p
Sprinkling of herbs and a splash of chilli sauce
    Lots of council pop :)
    Some frozen peas- 20p

I think that will be enough soup for the week, so 5 portions and that is 30p a portion too, again, would be cheaper without the bacon.

I hope I worked them out correctly!

I've made it now so in green is what I actually did...

    Spanish nettle stew

5 tbspns olive oil from sun dried toms jar 12p Oil approx 6p
250g chorizo sausage, finely chopped 1.95 1015 cals
500g onion, peeled and finely chopped 17p 210 cals
2 clove of garlic, peeled and finely chopped 6p didn't use this, as the chorizo was garlicky, but I think it would still be yummy with more...
    300g celeriac finely chopped 42p 127 cals used 500g so 70p
1 kg fresh spinach or nettles, washed and chopped (£3 with fresh spinach)
    can tomatoes 33p
250g dry weight chickpeas, soaked boiled and simmered 23p
1.3 litres chicken stock 11p for chicken gravy didn't use this
salt and freshly ground black pepper

125g smoky bacon, finely chopped and cooked 28p
    didn't use this

If 12 servings, then 29 pence per serving:money::money::money:unless you use spinach, then it's super pricey!

made 9 servings and was 17p per serving

Put a couple of tablespoons of oil into a large pot and add the chorizo. Allow to heat up and cook for a couple of minutes until the fat comes out of the chorizo, then add your onion, garlic and celeriac. Turn the heat down and cook slowly for 15 minutes with a lid on and without colouring the onions. Now take the lid off. Stir and add your nettles/spinach, tomatoes, chickpeas and chicken stock. Bring to the boil, then lower the heat and simmer for around 40 minutes.

At this point you can remove about a third of the mixture and puree it in a food processor. Pour it back into the pot, give it a good stir and season to taste with salt and pepper. Remove from the heat and stir in the smokey bacon and 2 or 3 tablespoons of oil.

didn't do the pureeing in the end, just added a little more water, salt and pepper, to get the consistency of a stew/curry...

Bashful, I really understand how you feel. I was very scared too, and no amount of people saying 'you'll be fine!' made any difference. I wish I could say something reassuring. What I'd like to add is that as an anxious person, everything has turned out much better than I thought and I'm consequently very happy. I think it's women who blithely enter in to it all thinking labour will be a doddle and the baby will never cry or wake up in the night who are less well prepared than you are. Well done for thinking it all through!

Also, gas and air is brilliant! Really took the edge off.... I guzzled 9 canisters!
I really rate a TENS machine too. Bought one at 39 weeks cos was worried he'd come before I could hire it, but they're pretty reasonable to hire, and good in the early stages (and throughout) to build up your endorphin response...

lol love the costings sian - very me...mine usually come (much to weezls despair) under the had in already so it didnt cost nuffink did it eh!! Bless her dear readers she is a really patient friend! Far, far more patient and worrying than me who is more like a speak now, think later kinda girl!! On paper we should never be friends but I'm very thankful we are!
Ok verdict on the beans and bacon is that its nice but surprisingly filling so I'll be splitting the portions in 1/2 so you can definately get 6. Also think it would make good soup if you whack in another tim toms and whiz it (I dont like coarse soup)...
Havent tried shaz cake yet but will after I have made a cusion! Meant to start earlier but went for a "wee snooze" that lasted 3 hours! oops!
oops crossed posts! Can confirm that our weezl is a worrier and was very worried about Fergus coming (can totally understand why...just lookes owwie!) but after the event she was very happy and surprised. Do feel for oh's/DF's though as it cant be nice to watch...Its incredible when you see them out that they came out but then bodies are remarkable at adapting to the process and getting you through it. Me I'd have any drug going and one for luck and prefereably unconcious! Fears of the worst are also quite normal as its a scary thing to go into but our weezl was exstatic when I spoke to her just after! Will say one for you and hope that all goes well...keep us posted!

:DISOM - you and Weezl are friends I reckon to prove the phrase "attraction of opposites"....from where I'm standing thats how it looks to me

Reckon I like Weezl because she's an "anxious little soul" (errr...like me...whoops...) and likes things quite precise and organised....and there is the leetle matter of a not particularly straitlaced sense of humour:rotfl: - I have me doubts about how we'd manage with typical "maiden aunts" in the room (err...and I AM a maiden aunt.....).
