  • Hi there Peeps :D

I just wanted to say that I have posted a couple of posts on this thread but I lurk mostly

This thread is my fave one out of them all and I really appreciate the recipies too. has helped me beome more frugal in the kitchen and think of interesting things to do with the ingredients I already have. So I want to say thankyou to everyone :D for all their idea's. I am always printing off recipe's that would be ideal for me and my hubby. I just need to get them in a sort of....order so I can find what I want!

Something I always used to buy is the Chilli packet mixes. I am not going to do that anymore. I am SURE I can make it from scratch to taste similar?

Does anyone have a good recipe to make a thickish chilli mixture?:confused:

I have hunted everywhere this afternoon and I am SURE I hae seen one before? Can't find it anywhere now :( Can someone send me a recipe or a link? I would be veeery appreciative!:j:j

i budget on £50 a week. (Don't faint!) tho it was FAR more when we got married. but the pot that has the food money in it every week is growing slowly.... and we have started using that for going out etc or wen we have other people round for drinks etc. I am ALWAYS looking for bargains and will hardly ever pay full price for anything. I have started using Charity shops now too. which I NEVER did before.(my family are a bit snobby about them!) Have picked up a few bargains. even for the kitchen, still in their boxes.

Just seen that this is a REALLY long post :o sorry! Hope it hasn't put anyone off reading it! I am still fairly new (ish) and I atill have a job understanding how to use the site too :o so any links to any other threads that you are enjoying would be great!:D (hope you don;t mind Weezle)

Thanks to everyone. ESPECIALLY Weezle.....which I think that most of us feel they actually "know" now! :rotfl::rotfl:

    Morning all

Well I have a loaf of dough proving, and a pan of leek n potato soup on the go .... Have decided that for the time being Im going to have to make hubbies soups as and when I need them (no room in the freezer YET  ).. so Im making enough for 2 flasks at a time.... he will get leek n potoato tomorrow.. then I will make a different one for thurs and then leek n tata for friday...It smells lovely -so i might snaffle a small bowl for lunch :p ..
I picked up that 2kilo net of leeks for i think €3.. i thought it felt much heavier -Just weighed them and there is 4 kilo  :j .. And they are the lovely thin sweet ones :T
So I have used some in the soup , tomorrow im making a thick cheese sauce (have loads of cheese) adding some saute leeks, peas, and cooked pasta and making a macaroni cheese thingy... Then I will use some more of the leeks with the leftover chicken and make a pie ;)
Hopefully that will be the end of the leeks for now ..hhhmmm just need to deal with all the cabbage next :rotfl:

Dinner tonight is layered potatoes n onions with bacon on the top -baked in the oven -one of my faves ..I have a serious potato fetish  in fact im a Carb junky :o

Boredofbeingathome - I got my sausage maker from a store on E-bay... its a "shark" It only comes out to play every 2-3 months but I make at least 10lb of sausage at a time -well it saves washing up :D . It has to be the best gadget I have I think..... I think last time I worked out my sausages they were costing me about 4p each -I will have to do new costings when i make my next batches.... I could make them cheaper but I don't put any breadcrumbs etc in mine..just meat and herbs n seasonings.
We never really had sausage that often as even the really good ones seemed to be full of fat -these aren't like that and with being solid meat they are filling -so we eat less :j although left to his own devices hubby would eat the lot :rotfl:

Right I had better get and check the nonny mouse site and then get on with some knitting :T
have a great day everyone :D
Just realised..has Munchki disappeared? or have I just missed her posts?.. wooo hoo munchki -where are you????

Many thanks Mrs.M, i have had rubber chicken soup for my dinner today..everyone wanted some, but i selfishly slurped away at it..
I used to be an absolute sausage fiend when i was younger..have been known to eat them raw!:o I was more sensible when i got older, and now only try to have them once a week, and the veggie ones as well..since joining slimming world..the pleasure has gone out of it for me, so making my own and making them sin free ones would be an ideal solution...off for a looksie on fleabay now.:D

  • Well I'm sitting here waiting for my first Asda home delivery and he hasn't turned up! Was supposed to be here between 3 & 5 and its now 5:45 and no sign. I've done Tesco for years and never had a problem, they at least ring if they are going to late, infact they are more often early than they are late. Nearest Asda is about 20 miles away for delivery was a good idea for me to get some bargains but not likely to repeat if this is typical!!!!!

    sorry had to vent.......
  • Bunny you don't live near me do you ?? Our asda is rubbish too they are always late and loads of subs

on my first ever delivery i asked the driver to explain the reciept as it was different to tescos ..........................he bit my head off and said you'll have to wait till i bring all this in first i nearly told hom not to bother

    The tesco staff are lovely

I do shop in asda but go myself

right phoned them up and he said the order had been cancelled! Tried to add something to the order yesterday before the cut off and they didn't have it, there isn't any option to cancel an amendment or abandon change so its left the order hanging without letting me know that there was any issue af therefore cancelled it!!! I'm amazed at the design of the Asda site, I found it hard enough to find my way around as it was as its not very intuitive but for it to leave a record locked for 24 hours without releasing it back to its previous state is ridiculous in the extreme! I should know I used to be a Web Developer in a previous life and this was exactly the kind of application I built. Thats it now, this was an experiment and I shall stick to my tried and tested Tesco, I've always said I should be on commission for them, the amount of people I've recommended it to! Problem is now I have to go to Tesco this evening as theres !!!!!! all food in the house as I've been expecting Asda to come!!!!!!!!!

    Not a happy Bunny!

  • Chilli mixture....

Vegetarian (my norm because its cheap!! ) - tin of drained red kidney beans, tin of baked beans and a tin of chopped tomatoes (or since there's about 3p difference, a tin of whole tomatoes chopped yourself!) all mixed in a big pan with chilli powder to taste. :p Simple but effective!

Add fried onion, mixed peppers etc if you have them in.

    Meaty chilli...

Fry mince with onions, garlic and a beef bovril crumbled in. Add red kidney beans and chilli powder to taste. I normally thicken it up with gravy granuals, although I'm sure others on here would use lentils or oats to better effect. I'm afraid I don't make the meaty one often! :rotfl: :o

Well I'm sitting waiting for my 1960s vegetarian recipe to cook. Had some sliced bread I was passed on and needing to use it up so:

    SAVOURY BREAD AND BUTTER PUDDING
    6 slices buttered bread
    6-8 oz grated Cheddar cheese
    1 pint full fat milk
    3 eggs (beaten)
    salt, pepper
    4-8 oz tomatoes (sliced)

Fill 2 pint greased pie dish with layers of bread and cheese.

mix milk, eggs and seasoning. Pour over this.

Put tomatoes round the edge of the dish.

Stand the dish in a tin of water and bake on the top shelf for about 45 minutes until mixture is just set and puffy at 180C or Gas Mark 4.

    """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""

This is from "500 recipes - vegetarian cookery". For anyone cooking on a budget one cant do much better than investigate 1960's/1970s vegetarian cookbooks - the recipes in them are just so cheap.

I havent had this one for ages - right just off to have a looksee how its doing.

(NB: Have made adaptations to allow for fact that cheese always meant Cheddar or similar back then and milk always meant full-fat. Bit beyond me to amend measurements to metric !)

Sound nomnom - and I have some 'end of sliced loaf' bits in the freezer need using so may try this in the next week or so :)

    BTW: 2oz = 56g, 4oz = 113g, 6oz = 170g, 8oz = 227g, 1lb = 454g

Duly sitting here chomping my savoury bread and butter pud down now - yep still fine by 21st century standards....best to use the max. amount of tomatoes specified...and maybe have a green salad with it perhaps....well one could also use baked beans I guess...

EDIT - just thinking when they said "buttered bread" - thats exactly what they would have meant...but it was fine with the good-quality bread spread I just used - mind you "Value" butter would have been cheaper than the expensive bread spread I buy!
