hugs all...off to babysit in a mo but need to iron sommat for tomorrow first! weetabix for tea!

hello weezl...hope youre ok..see you've been on at some point...

oh yes forgot - got a reply re birkenstocks who said "I'm afraid this not true once your sandals wear out you'll need to buy a new pair." well at least I tried..did wonder if it was too good to be true and it was - here at least!!

Not that I'm admitting anything <cough> - but it has been known chez ceridwen to eat porridge for lunch or dinner myself:o Well...yer cant always find the time to cook a "proper" meal yer knows!:D I admit to actually liking it cold as well.

Re the birkenstocks....darn it...there'd been me making mental notes re Birkenstocks along the lines of "Hmmm.....very sustainable...right, if I need a new pair of sandals ever...will investigate"...okay back to the drawing board it is then. (But with the number of pairs of footwear I have I could even be in a position to have enough to "see me out"......thinks...goes off to calculate number of pairs of footwear I have x estimated years to come....... )

We went foraging today for blackberries and were just a little bit successful :

Just need to wash and sort them now. Will definitely be freezing some :D There were loads still unripe so I think we'll make it a regular thing. Just about all of them made it into the boxes, although I did notice some pink staining around DD's mouth :rotfl::rotfl:

    Hi all,

A follow up on the mystery berries. Went into town with 3rd daughter. Tried the berries, well actually she tried them first and didn't keel over, they taste a bit like rasperries and a bit like blackberries. (DD3 saya they taste a bit like gooseberries?) We are both still here to tell the tale, but I forgot to take a tub to collect them and it was pouring with rain, so they will have to wait a few more days I think.

From the links you have kindly put on, they may be wineberries. At least this is the nearest thing I have seen so far.

Cheap tea today. DS's girlfriend's mum sent a whole tray of chicken drumsticks left from her 40th party at the weekend. Cooked some whoopsed spring cabbage, carrots , potatoes and was going to make gravy. DH came into kitchen said he would rather have them curried! Hence tea was potatoes, carrots, cabbage and curried chicken. Interesting meal demolished by all seven.

Recipe for Marrow chutney as promised a week or so ago

I've just managed to get Grandma's recipe from my parents...... they send their apologies that it's all pounds and ounces, but that was the way my Grandma always worked and my parents switch their scales to imperial when making it ;) They also said they hope people enjoy this as much as my Dad, my brother and I do :)

Have "spoken" to my Mum re: the discrepancies in weight mentioned, and she says the 4lb in step 1 is what she got from my Grandma -- the 3.5lb/2lb in the ingredients list is a pencil note she's written on herself when making it. So at some point she's clearly bought a 3.5lb that gave a 2lb yield, so this is a note to remind her that she needs 2 marrows in future.

    Marrow Chutney
1 Large Marrow (3.5 lb whole, 2 lb cut) * see note above *
    1.5 oz Mustard
    1.24 lb Sugar
12 Chillies (mum uses dried chillies, but I've only ever had powder so must have used that or totally omitted this!!!)
    12 Cloves
    3.5 – 4 pts Best Malt Vinegar
    0.5 oz. Powdered Turmeric
    0.5 oz. Powdered Ginger
3 lb Pickling Onions or Shallots
    2 Tablespoons of Salt

    Method.
Peel and remove centre of Marrow, and cut into small cubes. (4 lb Marrow). Sprinkle with 2 Tablespoons Salt and let it stand overnight.
    Drain off water.
Mix to a paste the Ginger, Mustard and Turmeric with about 0.5 pt Vinegar.
Bring to boiling point, the sugar and onions (which have been peeled and minced very coarsley or cut very small), chillies, cloves (held in an old piece of muslin or similar, so that they can be removed at the end of the cooking time) and vinegar.
When at the boil, add the marrow and boil until the Marrow is absolutely colourless. Cool slightly and bottle in warmed jars.

Thanks Cheryl, will be trying that recipe!

Report back on the courgette cakes- DH preferred the one without cinnamon, but liked both! (He was allowed a slice of each, but I had to cut them...)

Sorry, but I had to laugh at this - I must remember always to take DD with me when I'm out gathering stuff from hedgerows, just in case I need a guinea pig to try out anything I'm not sure of! :rotfl: :rotfl:

Gee I'm sorry ISOM. It's certainly true here in Australia.

And I'd assumed given the pictures and order form on the British site the same would be true there:
    http://www.birkenstock.co.uk/index.php?m=construction&a=repair
I don't think there's a shoe that could be considered more "worn out" than the pair in the "before" picture, and they repaired that
I've looked at the repair order form, and they offer a complete sandal rebuild....
I wouldn't give up yet ISOM.

  • ahh delited post! To do shortened versio I didnt buy the forraged stuff from you did I welshwoofs? Spooky that you posted re the same as I was out buying it!! Are you in Wales?
Re the bread makers can I suggest that people who want HM bread have a go at making it by hand BEFORE they buy one! Reason for this is I spent 65 (morphy richards fastbake) on mine & sold it a year later for 35...30 loss and I discovered fairly soon that I enjoyed making bread & didnt like the square loaf shapes. Plus found good, quick recipes so its not too much hassle now...I would just hate people to waste money on something that is, at the end of the day a want rather than a need. Plus they are huge & take up alot of space...Just a thought and feel free to ignore me, buy one & fall in love! I did love mine but making my own was far better (& more impressive me thinks!). Instead invest in a couple of silicone loaf "tins" and try some of the recipes on here!! Feel free to contradict me! I dont mind!
Hi in search of me! I completely agree aout the Bread Maker!!!!
Tho I am looking to be making my own bread "properly" now. do you have any good recipies for a newbie bread maker..... like myself ;) that arn't too hard?!!!!
    Ta! :D
