    here they are :D

I think they worked out ok!

Shaz the packet had 120g in it, and I used half, so yep, 60g went into the gnocchi.

    Post how you get on?

They look lovely Weezl! I think my mixture maybe didn't have enough flour in it so didn't stick together properly. Will have to try again.. must admit I have a strange liking for instant mash, so it's a good excuse to buy some! :D

shaz, you're well stocked now lass eh?

I think it's only meat that's a problem with double freezing.... Cream should be ok.:D

exciting times having all that lovely meat in...:T:T:T

mama67 your recipe book sounds great, very frugal! Look forward to any recipes you'd like to share!

Have just made the gnocchi, bit fiddly, but a good value meal I think, 4 large portions for 17.6p, so just the sauce to allow for...

    A pesto-y sauce will make the meal 19p a person, a tomato-ey one will be 14p a person :money:

ISOM/BOB?, if I make a batch of gnocchi with wholemeal flour and potato and a tomatoey sauce without oil, would that be a SW friendly dinner for ISOM?

Also, BOB, thinking of how your family are meat fans, have you spotted the deal on at Morrisons this weekend? 4 chicken portions for 50p! 2 peppered steaks for 50p! I know where I'm gonna be early on saturday morning! Sorry to our veggie friends....

    Love Weezl x

Yep it should be SW friendly ( the four will be syn valued)and i have spotted the offers, we have inserts in our weekly free paper.:rotfl:
Yesterdays bean curry was a winner and so tasty..

1 tin of salad beans -can't remember where i bought from.by harvest morning-so don't know cost
    1/2 onion,-3p 1 garlic bulb-1p, frozen sweetcorn...about 300g-20p??
    Tin of toms-19p
    stock -1p

2 tablespoons of medium curry powder, from tesco value range-1p
Any other herbs were free from garden.

sweat the onions garlic, herbs and spices together, add beans, sweetcorn and tin of toms with stock..cook until thickened

Serve wih rice, 30p...mm lovely it was and could have eaten two bowls.

About 75p in total. sandwiches, were 12p and breakfast was porridge, about 3p ( value bag of porridge oats from Netto 39p) Milk was 33p. snacks -10p, tea-3p.HM loaf worked out at 15p. Not bad really, but reckon it will be dearer if i knew where i bought the beans from.:rotfl:
Will be buying more fruit and veg tomorrow, when i am feeling better. Have some sort of virus...

    Re: The half cow......

My parents had a HUGE chest freezer (only freezer they had), and they used to order half a lamb, half a pig (must have come with 'bits' as my Mum always made Brawn for her and my Dad) and a quarter cow.....

They bought very other little meat through the year (other than chicken) to feed a family of 4 (and occasional foster children, but as they were always under the age of 2 and often under 6 months they didn't eat much of it ;) )

    Pigs trotters without pain...

    HMK

thank you! your recipe sounds much nicer than the ones I was found. most of them were quite "chef-ey" ie - lots of fancy ingredients.

after browning the trotters could i put it all in the slow cooker for the afternoon?

I did find an article that suggested pigs trotters could keep you looking young! they are full of collagen - which makes our skin elastic when we're young. It's in lots of expensive moisturisers, so although many people wouldn't want to eat pigs trotters they may be smearing their faces with them!

Found a really tasty recipe for Sweet Potato Patties.
Basically, you cut 7oz of regular potato and 7oz of sweet potato into chunks and boil until tender. Drain and allow to steam dry for a couple of minutes before mashing. In a small pan, heat 1 teasp of olive oil and gently saute 1 finely chopped garlic clove and 1 diced shallot for 2 mins (I used lazy garlic and an ordinary cooking onion). Add ½ teasp cumin seeds and 1 teasp khalonji (black onion/nigella) seeds and cook for 1-2 mins more. Mix into the mashed potato - Season - then shape into 4 patties and coat in a little flour. Fry in a little olive oil for 2-3 minutes on both sides until golden.

I haven't tried it yet, but have thought about freezing them before frying. Hope this is useful.

Can anyone direct me to the khalonji bread recipe, please.......
