Cupcake Birthday / Celebration cake idea! 1st Feb 08 at 6:11 PM
    Hiya x

I thought I would share this idea as it looked so fab.

I was out the other night for a meal and it was a ladies birthday in the restuarant. When the waiting staff brought the cake out she had this amazing looking cupcake stand full of cupcakes as her birthday cake and it looked amazing.

It looked a bit like this

It was just brilliant and I thought what a fab idea - especially for me as I cannot cook to save my life.

    Hope this helps someone.

    Alison x

My daughter said that muffins are just manly cupcakes.

You've all got me hankering after a good old fairy cake here! I'm loving the links.

To be honest I was a bit confused when this "Cupcake" craze hit everywhere!
Ive always called little cakes in cases, fairy cakes or butterfly cakes.

When I went to America they sold "cupcakes" which were a lot bigger than the fairy cakes I`m used to and so much more decorated with a mountain of butter icing and sprinkles.

As for a muffin Ive always thought of that as a chocolate chip/ blueberry cake in a larger case but not decorated.

Im starting my search for the cupcake stand again today!

Just been having a look in my cake decorating books and noticed the ice cream cakes in one of them.

They suggest either making or buying a batch of fairy cakes. Trim then to size to fit in an ice cream cone. Cover in coloured butter icing, then texture with a knife to look like ice cream. You could even pop a flake in or sprinkle with hundreds and thousands.

To keep them upright they suggest using an upturned egg box, cut holes in just wide enough to hold the cone bottoms. Cover then egg box in tin foil to make it look nicer.

Also noticed in there some lovely litte marshmallow flowers that could be used for decoration. Take a marshmallow, roll it out using a rolling pin till its flat (this is quite sticky) snip into the edges with some scissors and press a smartie or chocolate button into the middle ( I used a bit of icing to keep the button in place). They look really pretty.

Slighty away from cupcakes here but they were very popular... have you seen those chocolate cups? I got mine in M&S on a 3 for 2 offer. We filled them with some raspberry eton mess and they were scrumptious! I had to hit people away from them to take this picture before they all vanished.....

    Now I feel all fat

Thats it savvy a trip to Chichester is on the cards for Easter... are there little boutiques etc... I love anything like that...

I love little individual shops like those in the lakes... love getting bits there for gifts for people...

I do need to see this cupcake shop tho... Ive got a pic in my head of 50`s America style with frilly pinafores and sun always shining type thing... ooo there I go again... dream on!

In my town we have a lovely shop that sells homemade chutneys ( the type wth the checky lids.. fab!), flans, cakes and the lovely caramel shortbread.

I really want to open a shop now I think about it...

savvy I think you could be on to something with the gluten free range and diet cakes. Carrots in a carrot cake would make it healthy.. right... lol! I love to experiment so I`m going to have a go at making "light" version fairy cakes etc.

There's all sorts of little quaint shops in Chichester (and the biggest Roman mosaic I've ever seen at Fishbourne), and most of the original shop fronts are still there in tact, so big chains aren't so imposing, which is something we like. It's very much like Winchester and Salisbury which I also love. IF you do go to Chichester, see if you can spot the original Shippams Paste factory clock and front
My OH comes from the Lakes, so I love visiting Bowness when we're up there Actually I think I like anywhere that Lakeland put a shop!
