New Gmail slow 9th Nov 18 at 11:02 AM
Is anyone else finding that the new 'improved' Gmail is really slow to open? (I meant the web based service rather than the app.)
    TIA

Yep slower when signing in (once in it's speedy as ever), and sometimes it stops in the middle of loading and have to sign in a second time.

Why do you need to sign in each time?

While it is loading there is an option to revert to basic html version of the page which will be quicker to load.
If you prefer it you can make that the default setting.

Puzzling unless you deliberately log out after each session. Even if my computer suffers after a power cut and has restarted it still logs into Gmail/Google account automatically.

Ha was wondering if that's what you meant, I don't stay logged in to Gmail, I use more than one account and sometimes log in on a different PC.

On my PC it used to be an eye-blink to open gmail. Now it's 3 seconds with new gmail.

Slow is relative. But on an i7 processor, 3 seconds is enough time to process several billion instructions, so at least from the computer's perspective it's now slow and bloated.

    +1

The new Gmail web interface is noticeably slower than the old one, not just on opening but also on use (e.g. switching between folders for the first time in the current session). The basic HTML version doesn't have the same slowness - it is very snappy (albeit quite a "clunky" view). The previous non-HTML interface was much quicker.

I'm also not keen on the new look. It seems to take an age to open, but once I'm in it is much the same as before.

Are you using Chrome by any chance? There is a development feature you can turn off which will speed it up - Google 'Turn off Quic in Chrome' and try that.

Yes it's slow, though somewhat less slow within the past couple of weeks for me.

It seems to be the case with many "upgrades" these days that features and speed are reduced (i.e. they are a backward step). Following complaints, the developers finally get it back to something like the previous version, and their efforts are hailed as a marvellous achievement!
