    I would say that Gin is classed as as spirit. It isn't a knowledge competition as such, so I guess there isn't a trick question.

    So I said Champagne and White Wine were wines

    Don't know where you got that reference from but put simply, wine is fermented and spirits are distilled. Gin is generally made by adding botanicals to previously distilled spirit or by redistilling spirits with added botanicals. See HERE

    In the Novel Wine website (the company offering the prize). They have a section for wines, were you can find white wine and sparkling wine. The also have a spirits section, were they have gin.
